Maia Stretches Premiership Lead
2018-04-23 by Harry Troy

Brazilian rider Ruan Maia extended his lead in the jockey’s premiership with a winning double on Friday nights mixed turf and sand race night, to give him a 17 win lead over four times Champion jockey Luis Corrales.

Maia on 40 wins leads Corrales who is on 23, with Peter Ho and Wayne Smith in equal third place on 22 victories.

Rose Gold Alloy was the first of Maia’s winners when he powered to the line late to beat Ultra Light Alloy (Horace Lam) in the Class 3 & 4 Handicap over 1510 metres, with early leader Eangle Commander (Martin Wepner) weakening to run third.

Prepared by the combined yard of Victor Chan and Kenny Seo, Rose Gold Alloy is an English bred son of Dutch Art (GB) from a Cape Cross mare in Overturned. The four year commenced his racing career in France racing as Chinese Art where he finish a close second at Chantilly over 1300 metres on the sand, before a well beaten fifth on the turf over 1600 metres at Maisons-Laffitte.

The gelding was bought to Macau by his owners Au Yeung Kai and Lee Yuen Fat no doubt with the SJM Derby in mind which is set down for July 28. At the present the gelding would be a bit short ratings wise to gain a start being only on a mark of 58 before Friday’s win. However his two runs prior on the turf at 1500 metres beaten two lengths and his most recent at 1800 metres where he was posted deep in the run when beaten six lengths were both full of merit. With still three months before the Derby there are plenty of suitable races on both the turf and the sand where Rose Gold Alloy can accumulate enough rating points to gain a Derby spot.

The much traveled Mr. Singh was the second of Maia’s winners when he destroyed his rivals in the Class 2 over 1350 metres in the very slick time of 1.20.9.

Mr. Singh took command soon after the start and lead comfortably in the run before darting away at the top of the straight for a good win over Benevolent Friend (Eric Cheung), with Eastern Paradise (Wayne Smith) back in third.

The five year old French bred gelding has done his share of traveling in his racing career having started racing in Germany as Plus Night under trainer Andreas Wohler. Whilst there he placed second at Mulheim before winning a 3YO Maiden race at the same track, then followed another second at Krefeld all on the turf.

From there the gelding went to the UK to Newmarket trainer Stuart Williams where he raced four times for three third placed efforts at Kempton, Lingfield and Chelmsford all on the sand. Then it was off to Macau and trainer Joe Lau for new owner Mr. Dhaliwal Manjit Singh. The five year old won a Class 4 Handicap under Lau’s care before being moved to his latest trainer Danny Wong.

Mr. Singh’s run time on Friday was the fastest run that has been posted for the 1350 metres since Vigor Partner’s class record set in November 2015.

Garlic And Chili was another impressive winner on Friday and is a horse destined for better things after a courageous effort to win the last of the night the Class 4 & 5 over 1350 metres.

After beginning awkwardly from gate 10 Garlic And Chili was well back and trapped very wide as the field thundered into the back. After working forward in the run under jockey Roger Yu the three year found himself in sixth spot and three deep. From the six hundred he continued to roll on and was on a line of five around the turn and the widest runner. The son of Redoute’s Choice really dug deep to stretch late and beat Tyson (Peter Ho), with Ideal Power Horse (Eric Cheung) a half length away in third.

Prepared by Sio Cheong, Garlic And Chili is out of the Zabeel mare Too Ra Loo and was an $80,000 Aud purchase at the 2016 Gold Coast Horses In Training Sale when knocked down to the Aquis Farm Group. The gelding was named Ra Touche but did not even trial in Australia and somewhere along the line changed ownership to Mr. Yuen Siu Fai and was exported to Macau.

Fridays night’s win was his second in Macau both at the 1350 metres on the sand however his talents are not going to be reserved just for the all weather. His runs on the turf have been full of merit and the further he goes in distance the better suited he will be.
