Big Night For Tony Fung
2018-05-07 by Harry Troy

A winning treble on Fridays nights turf card has taken Tony Fung to within one win of Trainer’s Premiership leader Danny Wong in what is shaping up to be an intriguing battle for the remainder of the season.

Fung started five runners on the night for three winners and two close seconds which included the quinella in the first of the night 0 to 55 Special Conditions Handicap with Lover Paradise and To’s Family.

Lover Paradise ridden by Brazilian rider Ruan Maia got Fung’s night off to a flying start, with a last stride win over the stablemate and even money favorite To’s Family (Luis Corrales) in the 1200 metres event.

Lover Paradise is from the Aquis Farm Group in Australia where he was registered as Dorset but did not even get as far as a barrier trial before being exported to Macau. The three year old gelding had been speedy but a bit weak in his four runs prior on the all weather over 1050 metres, however the key to Friday night’s victory was the decision by Ruan Maia to take a sit off To’s Family down the side, enabling him to get a strong 1200 metres in 1.12.0 on a track rated yielding to soft.

Fung had to wait until race four for his second win of the night with his six year old New Zealand bred galloper Grand Double Win who took out the Class 2 over 1800 metres.

Ridden by Luis Corrales, Grand Double Win came from the tail of the field with a powerful late finishing run to beat Benson (Peter Ho), with Eastern Paradise (Ruan Maia) running in third.

It was win number five in Macau for Grand Double Win who raced in New Zealand as Buffalo Boy when trained by Barry Cook. The son of Buffalo Man (Can) won two races at Waikato and Otaki from his 17 starts there before arriving in Macau.

The speedy Chapman Way ridden by Fung’s stable apprentice Kevin Leung completed the trio for Fung with a blazing all the way win in the Class 5 & 6 over 1200 metres.

Chapman Way burst out of the gates a clear length in front of the rest and had no trouble crossing over from the extreme outside gate of 12 to lead easily. Once in the home straight there was no stopping for the son of Strategic Maneuver (Aus) who ran away for an easy win.

For apprentice Kevin Leung who is the twin brother to Hong Kong’s talented rider Derek Leung, it was surprisingly only his fourth winner for the season. Leung is a very capable rider that has ridden 78 winners in Hong Kong, Australia and New Zealand and is now plying his trade in Macau.

Tony Fung came within a short head of winning the last of the day the Class 4 Over 1500 metres when Lucky Today just failed to catch the highly promising Garlic And Chili on the line.

Garlic And Chili is another Aquis Farm castoff that was originally purchased for $80,000 Aud. at the 2016 Gold Coast Horses in Training Sale. Named Ra Touche by the Aquis Group, the son of Redoute’s Choice never even trailed in Australia but has shown ability in Macau right from day one and looms as a great Derby prospect for next season.

After Friday night’s meeting Danny Wong leads on 24 wins to Tony Fung’s 23, with Stanley Chin in third spot on 17 victories.

In the Jockeys’ standings Ruan Maia is a runaway leader on 41 winners 15 ahead of Luis Corrales with Peter Ho in third spot on 25 victories.
