Chavez Fits In Well To Macau Racing
2018-05-28 by Harry Troy

Former Singapore based jockey Oscar Chavez has wasted no time settling into Macau racing with a double on Saturdays all weather raceday.

Chavez has only had a total of 61 rides in the enclave in his current stint, for seven winners and thirteen placed efforts following his double at the weekend.

The much improved Beautiful Spring was the first of Chavez’s winners with a prefect rails hugging ride from the Panamanian born rider to power home for victory in the Class 2 Handicap over 1050 metres in the slick time of 1.01.8.

Beautiful Spring prepared by KH Leong, was originally purchased for $450,000 (Australian) by the Sun Bloodstock Group at the 2015 Sydney Easter Yearling Sales, where he was then placed in the stables of Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott where the then colt raced as Meteor Rain. From four runs he managed two third placed efforts at Gosford and Goulburn and was even stretched up to 1800 metres in one run at Randwick.

Arriving in Macau as a Derby hopeful the now gelding was even tried at 1800 metres here at his third race start without success. However the moment the four year was switched over to the sand surface he showed marked improvement winning once and placing five times over the 1350 metre distance.

Like all the Northern Meteor (Aud) breed we’ve seen in the enclave, the gelding relishes the sand surface and the drop to the even shorter 1050 metre sprints, has resulted in the bay winning two from his last two and he has developed into a cracking sprinter that beat our best on Saturday.

Chavez then struck again in race five the Class 4 & 5 Handicap over 1510 metres with the Victor Chan trained One From Many. The son of Congrats (USA) made it win number seven in Macau when he downed White Debbie (Ruan Maia) in the run to the post to win by a half length, with race favorite Golden Wealth (Fausto Henrique) back in third.

Chavez was a top apprentice in Panama before he landed in Singapore at the tender age of 20 years old in 1994. At his first season at the old Bukit Timah racetrack he won the Singapore Derby on Nobel Spirits for Mohd Yusof. The Champion rider in the Singapore Malaysian circuit in 1996, Chavez remained in the top bracket for over a decade with more than 1200 winners to his credit in Asia.

Victor Chan shared training honors for the afternoon with Alan Tam with both leading in a double.

Chan got off to a great start with Happiness Rose wining the first of the day the Maiden over 1050 metres under Luis Corrales.

Alan Tam’s Same Beauty came with a barnstorming run right down the outside to win the Class 2 & 3 over 1510 metres under jockey Charlie Chan. The win was a carbon copy of his victory on February 24th four runs back over the same distance, where the gelding relished the fast speed and came from the tail of the field to swoop late down the outside to score.

The promising Denzel’s Choice capped off Tam’s day with an all the way win in the last of the day the Class 3 & 4 over 1350 metres.

Denzel’s Choice a son of Denman (Aus) has shown ability right from day one but has been plagued by bad luck and wide draws in a lot of his runs.

On Saturday there was no such problem under Brazilian rider Fausto Henrique who sent the five year straight to the front to lead and then found plenty in the straight to hold on and win from Best Time (Luis Corrales), with Go Go Mission (Frankie Choi) in third.
