Trainer Peter Leyshan is banking on a Derby spot with his promising four year Hyshem following his impressive victory in Friday night’s Class 2 Handicap over 1800 metres.

In what was a perfect ride by Filipino horseman Breinell Yamzon, Hyshem found the rail out of the straight the first time and only went around one horse in the run, the tiring State Source Star. Hyshem, who was absolutely jogging coming to the home turn, was desperately in need of a run that presented soon after. The gelding charged through on the inside at the two hundred to run away for a big win.

Hyshem has been lightly raced by Peter Leyshan with only four starts in Macau prior to Friday’s win, but that has been by design with the Derby always the long term goal.

“He came with some nice form from Australia with a win at Seymour over 1600 metres when trained by Darren Weir, and then he won another 1600 metre race at the Sunshine Coast for Toby Edmonds.” Leyshan said.

“He looked an ideal Derby horse and after a couple of runs when he first arrived I put him away with Derby in mind.”

“I had a three race plan for him and that was the Guineas, this race and then onto the Derby three weeks later.”

Hyshem needed Friday’s win to secure a Derby spot with his rating at 61. That mark will change noticeably given the authority of his win over the Derby distance of 1800 metres.

“I think he meets all the Derby criteria now.” Leyshan added.

“The impressive win at the distance and he’ll be looking at probably nine points or more with the handicapper.”

Leyshan was full of praise for his former apprentice Breinell Yamzon after the race for his superb ride.

“I told Breinell to find the rail and don’t leave it and he gave him a perfect ride.”

With half the field four year olds vying for a derby start there were a few disappointments on the yielding to soft track.

Geoff Allendorf’s Luen On Treasure who went out equal favorite was put into a great spot by Oscar Chavez; however was a bit one paced in the straight. Turquoise Cry a stablemate to Luen On Treasure ran on ok and finished just in front Luen On Treasure in fifth spot beaten six lengths. Contented N Happy the second of Peter Leyshan’s runners ended up too far back in the run and was not happy in the conditions, ending up in ninth spot beaten over nine lengths. Ready Fire from the K H Leong yard battled on stoutly under Fausto Henrique for an encouraging fourth from a derby viewpoint, only beaten two and three quarter lengths.

Golden Thumb was another that saluted on the day per medium of a lovely ride by apprentice Kevin Leung in the Class 1 & 2 over 1200 metres.

In a race run at hot speed Golden Thumb was well back in the second half of the field on settling down. Leung just bided his time and saved many lengths by hugging the rail and had improved into a nice position coming to the turn. Once in the straight an opening presented and Golden Thumb burst through to hit the front and race away for a big win over Victory Megastar (Frankie Choi), with Stallion Elite (Mark Alvarez) running strongly for third.

Golden Thumb is an Australian import who only raced on one occasion in Victoria as Not Another Snip when prepared by Robert Smerdon for a nice third at Werribee.

Prepared in Macau by Tommy Tse, Golden Thumb has now won four races and placed another five times from his 16 runs, and picked up close to $850,000 HKD for his connections the Golden Pistols Racing Syndicate.

Kevin Leung is the twin brother to highly respected Hong Kong jockey Derek Leung who is enjoying one of his best seasons currently in fifth spot on the rider’s standings there. Kevin Leung has not had a great lot of opportunity since moving to Macau, however with riding displays like he produced on Friday night things are on the way up for him.

Oscar Chavez again took riding honors with a winning double on the night to take his tally to 14 winners in the enclave to date this season.

Chavez took the first of the night the 2 & 3YO Handicap over 1200 metres with a last stride win on Pearl Lucky for trainer Stanley Chin.   Chavez then rated the Alan Tam trained Kelson to perfection to lead throughout and win the Class 4 & 5 over 1500 metres.

Chavez has been a great addition to the riding ranks and has slipped up the ladder quickly to be in fifth spot in the riders standings.  As well as his 14 winners the Panamanian horseman has 11 seconds and seven thirds from his 85 rides.
