Racing Review
First Group Winner For Stanley Chin
2018-10-15 by Harry Troy

As a jockey Stanley Chin rode winners in 14 different countries around the world including his share of Group winners. As a trainer he has enjoyed a great deal of success in his four years since being granted a license, and whilst adding plenty of Cup and Trophy races to his resume, a black type race has eluded him; however that all changed on Sunday when The Whirlwind raced away for an big win in the Group 2 Autumn Trophy over 1600 metres (sand).

With Brazilian ace Ruan Maia in the saddle The Whirlwind lived right up to his name as he swept on by his opposition at the two hundred mark to power away for an easy win. Second placed Kelowna Star was shooting for three straight Autumn Trophy’s and finished the race off nicely, but was no match for the flying finish of The Whirlwind. Oriental Profit (Oscar Chavez) who was badly disadvantaged at the handicaps ran a mighty race to run in third.

Disappointment of the race was the 2/1favorite Obrigado Mais who got across easily from his wide gate and enjoyed a good run in transit, until being put under pressure at the five hundred by jockey Wayne Smith where he failed to respond.

Stanley Chin has been training now for four seasons and has prepared a total 81 winners to date. The Whirlwind was one of the first horses to enter his stables at the beginning of the 2014- 2015 season, and provided Chin with his first winner in the training ranks in a Class 3 contest over 1050 metres on the sand with Spanish rider Jorge Horcajada on top.

The Whirlwind was purchased by Stanley Chin from the UK on the strength of his two wins there on the all weather tracks at Kempton and Wolverhampton. The now seven year old has won six races in Macau and placed 21 times from his 49 starts and picked up close to $3.3 million in prize money for connections.

Chin currently has the biggest stable in Macau with 34 horses in work with some nice new blood in his yard, and must surely rate as a great chance to take out his first trainers Championship. For the past two seasons he has been in fourth spot on the ladder on 25 victories but has the added firepower this season to make a great bid for the title.

For Ruan Maia the win was part of a big weekend that seen him ride three winners on Friday nights sand card and another three winners on Sunday. With ten winners already under his belt Maia has set up a six win lead over Peter Ho and Luis Corrales who are both on four wins each. Maia after the weekend is on a 34% win rate and a 76% place rate.

The last of Maia’s winners on Sunday was the highly promising Luen On Fortune from the Geoff Allendorf yard who made two wins straight when took out the Class 4 over 1200 metres on the turf.

Allendorf purchased the three year old son of Fighting Sun (Aus) at the Magic Millions National Yearling Sales last June, and left the youngster with Donna Grisedale at Kembla Grange to be broken in and educated.

“I do that with all my young horses to give them plenty of time before bringing them to Macau, it’s always worked well for me” Allendorf said.

“I bought this horse and another we bought at the same sale Luen On Prestige to Macau in June this year and they both had one run end of August.”

“This horse has really come on in leaps and bounds since his first run we are very pleased with him.”

“The other one (Luen On Prestige) will need a bit more time.”

Lover Paradise maintained his unbeaten record on the turf making it five straight wins on the surface in the Class 2 & 3 Handicap over 1200 metres on Sunday.

Ridden by Kevin Leung, Lover Paradise went keen in the lead with Niubi Emperor to the corner before slipping away at the two hundred, and had a enough in reserve to hold off the fast finishing Luen On Treasure (Oscar Chavez) to win by a head, with Northern Legend (Ruan Maia) in third.

Prepared by Tony Fung Lover Paradise is by the Irish 2000 Guineas winner Canford Cliffs (IRE), and was originally in the ownership of Aquis Farm in Australia. The gelding was named Dorset but never made it to the barrier trials in Australia and was bought to Macau by owner Wong Hei Pui. His run time of 1.8.08 on Sunday suggests he will continue to handle to rise in grade.

For Kevin Leung who is the twin brother to Hong Kong jockey Derek Leung, Lover Paradise has provided him with a good start to his first season as a fully fledged rider with two winners to date,

Sunday’s other feature the Inglis Ready 2 Race Sale Stakes over 1800 metres was won in good fashion by the Rambo Tse trained Stallion Treasure ridden by Peter Ho.

In a clever move by Ho when the tempo steadied, Ho made a quick move from the back to put Stallion Treasure into the race albeit four deep. The decision worked well allowing the son of Bushranger (Ire) to get rolling from the eight hundred before the tempo quickened. Stallion Treasure had enough in hand at the wire to beat Flying Team (Oscar Chavez) who was on his back in the run, with Iced Jade (Breinell Yamzon) in third.

The race was a prelude to the Inglis Ready 2 Race Sale that was beamed live for online bidding to the Macau Jockey Club Members Lounge on Monday.
