Sand Specialist River Bobo chalked up win number 13 in Macau when he came with a powerful burst  late to down race favorite the speedy Fasuba (Ruan Maia)to win Saturdays Class 1 & 2 over 1050 metres.

Ridden by Oscar Chavez, River Bobo wasn’t well served at the getaway after beginning awkwardly and then suffering minor interference and found himself at the tail of the field. Chavez gradually let the seven old back into the race and eventually worked his way up third spot albeit eight lengths off the tearaway Fasuba. Still giving away five lengths at the two hundred metre mark, River Bobo was just starting to hit his stride and literally jumped out of the ground late to win easy on the line by three quarters of a length, with China Paradise (Peter Ho) in third in 1.01.7.

A son of Elusive City (USA), River Bobo was at one time Macau’s superior sand galloper winning his first four races in the enclave on the all weather surface going from his arrival rating mark of 45 to a career high of 123 points. Now a seven year old the gelding battles minor throat problems but was always going to be competitive on Saturday’s rating of 102.

Prepared by former Champion trainer Sio Cheong, River Bobo was a $48,000 NZD purchase at the 2013 Karaka Yearling Sales by owner Mr. King Ho a longtime supporter of the Macau Jockey Club. As well as his 13 wins the gelding has placed on 10 more occasions and picked up over $4 million HKD in prize money and judging by Saturdays win it’s not over yet.

The win on River Bobo gave visiting jockey Oscar Chavez his third for the weekend and giving him 10 winners for the new season, and took him into fourth spot on the rider’s standings.

S
aturday also had the MJC playing host to a large contingent of racing officials from the Korea Racing Authority and the Jockey Club Of Turkey who were in attendance for the two features races named in their honor.

The Korea Racing Authority Goodwill Trophy over 1050 metres was the first of the days features and was taken out by the very much in form Military Star ridden by Peter Ho, who gunned race favorite Gunstigmaster (Ruan Maia) to win by three quarters of a length, with Powerful Conqueror (Eric Cheung) in third spot.

Prepared by Tony Fung Military Star has been in superb form of late and Saturday’s victory made it three in a row and gave the son of Dragon Pulse (Ire) his first Cup win.

T
he Jockey Club of Turkey Goodwill Cup again over 1050 meters was the next on the card and was won by the Danny Wong trained Danny Choice who scored under Luis Corrales.

Sporting the blinkers for the first time Danny Choice a four year old son of multiple Group winner Denman (Aus) from the Racer’s Edge mare Edgeton, and was having just his fourth race start.

The gelding has been in training since early this year but could not get to the races due to his bad barrier manners in refusing to be loaded. Perseverance finally paid off with four year old mending his ways and he looks to have a future in the medium class range.

The victory on Danny Choice also gave Luis Corrales a treble for the two days racing and edged him to within three wins of Premiership leader Ruan Maia who is on 19 winners.
