Racing Review
Corrales and Chin Star
2019-06-24 by Harry Troy

Louis Corrales and Stanley Chin were the stars of Saturday’s mixed turf and sand twilight race day with Corrales booting home three winners and picking up two second placings for his five rides for the day.

Chin who has been edging away from his opponents in the Macau Trainers Premiership picked up another two winners for the afternoon to give him what appears to be an unassailable lead in the Trainer’sChampionships.

Corrales struck early in the day winning the first the Class 6 over 1500 metres on the Victor Chan prepared Special Steel who done a fine job under his 133 pounds from gate 10.

Special Steel with his good speed away from the gates was able to cross and sit on the tail of pacemaker Prosperity Star (Kevin Leung) who carted the field along at a good clip. Impeccable Genius under Horace Lam made a premature lightning move well before the turn that no doubt cost him victory, with Corrales simply biding his time on the back of the two. Once in the straight and balanced up Special Steel was able to gun down Impeccable Genius to win by a neck with Prosperity Star a head away in third.

Corrales teamed up with Stanley Chin to take out the Class 2 over 1500 metres with the well performed Royal Garden who literally sprouted wings over the last two hundred metres to power home right over the top of Golden Fans (Peter Ho), with Magnapegasus (Tshwaro Appie) in third.

Royal Garden has been a nice buy for owners Mr.Tang Chung Wai and Fung Pak Keung with Saturday’s victory taking his Macau record to four wins and six placings and close to %1.7 million in prize money. One of those placed efforts was a luckless neck second to Pearl Green in last season’s Macau Derby.

Royal Garden was formerly raced in New Zealand under the handle of Battle Tank where he won a 3YO maiden at Wanganui over 1360 metres when prepared by Opaki trainer Jim Wallace.

Stanley Chin rounded out his day when his promising three year old King Of Glamour was given a lovely ride by the stable apprentice Eric Cheung to win the Class 4 over 1050 metres.

Corrales completed his afternoon with a another last stride win on the Alan Tam trained Acing Pro in the Class 4 over 1510 metres. Acing Pro a son of Helmet (Aus) overcame a tough run in transit to dive late and nail One From Many (Oscar Chavez), with Fully Realized (Stephane Ladjadj) close up in third.

A four time Champion Jockey in Macau, Saturday’s treble takes Corrales to 41 winners for the season 13 wins in arrears of Ruan Maia who looks to have well and truly sealed his second Jockeys’ Championship.

Stanley Chin’s double stretched his lead to a nine win margin over Sio Cheong in the Trainer’s race. Chin on 40 victories has started to stretch away from his rivals and with just 16 race days left on the calendar looks set to claim his first title.

The minor spots in the Trainer’s Premiership will be interesting with only three winners separating the next four trainers. After Sio Cheong in second on 31, Alan Tam is next on 30 with Tony Fung on 29 and Danny Wong on 28.

Another nice win on the day was the K H Leong prepared Fortune Treasure under Oscar Chavez in the Class 2 & 3 over 1200 metres. The former Victoria galloper who raced there as Smoke Signal made it win number three in Macau with two placings from his 11 starts here.

A son of the 2003 Prix de L’Arc de Triomphe winner in Dalakhani (Ire), Fortune Treasure was put into a great spot by Chavez one out and one back in the run. Once in the straight Fortune Treasure quickly pounced on Casino Mok and sprinted clear. Mission Vision another former Victorian galloper ran on strongly from the back for second, with Gem Steed (Cliffy Lai) in third.

Whilst he only managed one win in Australia under trainer Mick Price which was an easy three and quarter lengths victory at Sale; Smoke Signal acquitted himself well at his last Australian run with a very creditable run behind Al Passem in a strong race over 1600 metres at Flemington only beaten 5.4 lengths.

The four year old continues the good form of horses to come out of Victoria to race in Macau, and the majority for not a lot of outlay.
