Superstar Shines Again
2019-09-23 by Harry Troy

Sheng Li Superstar maintained his wonderful record of consistency with an all the way win in Sundays feature the 2019 Magic Millions Gold Coast 2YO’s In Training Sale Trophy over 1200 metres.

Ridden by Brazilian Ruan Maia, Sheng Li Superstar was sent out an even money favorite in light of his brilliant win on the turf in similar company in July. On Sunday the son of Harbour Watch (Ire) burst out of the gates to immediately take charge and lead comfortably on settling from second favorite Mister Kaopu. Maia gave the gelding full rein at the top of the straight and he sprinted away from his rivals for a dazzling win in 1.08.1.

Fortune Treasure under Japanese rider Shogo Nakano ran on stoutly for second, with Mister Kaopu (Luis Corrales) sticking on well for third.

Prepared by Tony Fung, Sheng Li Superstar has put to together a wonderful record since arriving in the enclave with five wins and three placed efforts from his ten starts; and over $1.27 million HKD in prize money.

The five year old was originally looked upon as a sand star winning three of his first four starts on the all weather. At his first start on the turf the gelding led them up in the Macau Guineas on a yielding to soft track only to weaken late for seventh beaten just over three lengths. However it was his next turf run in July that made people really take him seriously as a grass horse, when he scored a narrow win over 1200 metres from the classy Pearl Green and course specialist Mister Kaopu.

Prior to coming to Macau Sheng Li Superstar had two runs in Victoria on the turf for a third at Wangaratta and an unplaced effort at Moe. It was his two wins on the synthetic at Geelong that bought him to the attention of trainer Tony Fung and owner Mr. Frank Wong, prompting them to purchase him for Macau.

Raced there as Westerly Wind by the Qatar Bloodstock Group and prepared by Henry Dwyer, the gelding showed his liking for the all weather winning two straight, one by a massive six lengths.

Being only lightly raced Sheng Li Superstars five year old season is looming as his best and he will be a force to be reckoned with in all the sprint races on both turf and sand.

Filipino rider Breinell Yamzon made a welcome return to the winner’s circle on Sunday when he bought the K H Leong trained Ready Fire with a well timed run to win the Pre –Training at Aquis Farm Stakes (Class 4 & 5) over 1200 metres.

Ready Fire who was back with the cap catchers early on, made steady ground deep coming to the turn before unleashing a powerful finishing burst down the outside to beat Sweet Buhman (Fausto Henrique), with Infinite Treasure (Charlie Chan) close up in third.

The six year old is by Sepoy (Aus) from the Redoute’s Choice (Aus) mare Sister Madly who is a half sister to the great Hong Kong Champion Silent Witness.

Sister Madly herself was no slouch winning the Group 2 Salinger at Flemington and the Group 3 How Now at Caulfield; in between those runs she ran second to Sepoy in the Group 1 Manikato at Moonee Valley.

Ready Fire is not destined for any illustrious heights, but will continue to be a good money-spinner for his connections in Macau with Sunday’s victory his third in the enclave along with seven placings, and is now nudging the three quarters of a million HKD mark.

Yamzon was on a real roll part way through last season when he suffered a pre race fall from Autumn Cloud resulting in a dislocated elbow and as well incurred two fractures. Not long back in the saddle Sundays win will be a huge confidence booster for him.

Macau’s newest jockey thirty year old Brazilian rider Dayversom Barros added another winner on Sunday with a big win on the 45/1 bolter The Moons Back in the Aquis Farm Draft At Magic Million (Class 2 & 3) over 1500 metres.

The Moons Back is generally an off speed runner but on Sunday was fired out of his outside gate by Barros to cross the field and sit alongside pacemaker Golden Fans. Once heads were turned for home the son of Hussonet (USA) bounded away for an easy win over the fast finishing Chromium Alloy (Horace Lam), with Golden Double (Ruan Maia) in third.

It’s been a great start for Barros who is in Macau on a four month riding contract with his win on The Moons Back coming hot on the heels of his double on the all weather Friday a week prior.
