Hostwin Meraki Relishes the Sand
2019-09-30 by Harry Troy

Former Australia galloper Hostwin Meraki has really found his calling on Macau’s sand surface scoring another big win on Sundays Class 1 & 2 over 1510 metres.

Prepared by Tony Fung and ridden by Frenchman Jean Baptiste (J B) Hamel, Hostwin Meraki demolished his opponents in a runaway win over Tavezbac (Fausto Henrique), with Mujaan (Peter Ho) a distant third.

Sunday’s victory was the fifth from eight starts on the all weather for the son of Swiss Ace (Aus), with four of his wins over the 1510 metres course.

The now five year old was an A$120,000 purchase at the Gold Coast National Yearling Sales in 2016 and commenced his racing career with Gary Moore at Rosehill in Australia. From a total of 12 starts he managed a Newcastle maiden win over 1200 metres followed by a Class 1 win at Hawkesbury over 1300 metres.

Arriving in Macau at the start of the last season Hostwin Meraki took an instant liking to the sand winning first up on the all weather in December, before succumbing to a few niggling leg problems resulting in two below par runs. The gelding then won three straight over 1510 metres in March, April and again scoring first up in July.

Sundays win took the bays earnings close to the $1million HKD mark for popular owners Mr. and Mrs. Tam Siu Keung, and has seen the geldings rating rise from his arrival mark of 67 to 99 points.

The win gave J B Hamel his tenth winner in Macau since arriving for the last three months of the season. The Frenchman has firmly established himself in the enclave is sure to be in the top bracket in the riders standings.

Danny Wong has got his hands on an exciting three year old in the way of Oriental Joyful who made it two straight wins on the sand when he annihilated his rivals in the to 0 to 45 Special Conditions Handicap over 1050 metres.

Ridden by Cliffy Lai, Oriental Joyful’s win was a carbon copy of his victory a fortnight back when he just simply gave nothing a chance, on both occasions leading throughout.

By the UK Group winner Redwood from the Bianconi mare Bianca Bay, Oriental Joyful is a half brother to the New Zealand Group 1 winner Dukedom and on breeding will certainly get a lot further in distance then Sundays 1050 metres.

Danny Wong later made it a double for the afternoon when the former Victorian galloper Captain Fabulous led all the way to win the last of the day, the Class 3 & 4 over 1350 metres under Dayversom Barros.

Captain Fabulous a son of Good Journey (USA) raced in Victoria as Lux Interior when prepared by Henry Dwyer winning two races from eight starts, a maiden at Geelong and a BM58 race at Wodonga.

The gelding while no superstar will pay his way for connections, in particular on the all weather.

Desi Style is another that is right at home on the all weather surface and picked up another win on Sunday in the Class 2 & 3 over 1050 metres.

Ridden by Frankie Choi, Desi Style showed plenty of grit over the final hundred metres to score from the fast finishing River Triple (Ruan Maia), with Destiny’s Choice (Fausto Henrique) close up in third.

The win by Desi Style capped off a great day for Tony Fung making three wins for the afternoon.
