Fasuba the dazzling thousand metre sprinter has produced an amazing performance to lead all the way in Friday night’s Group 2 Autumn Trophy over 1600 metres at the Taipa racetrack.

Ridden for the first time by Roger Yu, Fasuba as usual burst out of the gates to take up his regular front running role. Yu dropped the tempo for awhile in the back but was cheeky enough to up the ante from the six hundred metre corner, and had only two real chasers coming to the home turn the favorite Pearl Green and the well bet Hostwin Meraki, with a big gap back to the rest.

The five year old Irish bred gelding never looked in doubt in the straight after kicking away at the two hundred and fifty mark and ran out an easy two and a quarter lengths winner over Pearl Green (Ruan Maia), with a massive eight and three quarter lengths back to the third horse Duke De Vega (Stephane Ladjadj) in third.

Fasuba was bought to Macau by trainer James Moore and won his first three races straight over the 1050 metres course on the sand, quickly earning himself the tag of Macau’s fastest horse. Alan Tam took over the bays training in June last year and Friday’s night’s victory made it win number five since joining the Tam yard.

A son of the 2012 Irish 2000 Guineas winner in Power, Fasuba bolted away with a Maiden Stakes at Dundalk on the all weather and placed twice more before being imported to Macau. The gelding has won five races here over the 1050 metres with his dazzling speed running his opposition off their legs.

Alan Tam did pull off a surprise on one occasion when under Japanese rider Kakeru Mizuno he sat off the leader Sheng Li Superstar in the run before scoring a close win over 1350 metres. Most judges however put that down to the way the sand was riding on the night favoring on speed runners.

The 1600 metres of Friday’s Autumn Trophy was an entirely different story with Fasuba as expected friendless in the betting at $428.00 for the win.  However if the public were left dumbfounded by the win, Alan Tam was quietly optimistic about his chances.

“Fasuba has plenty of ability on the sand we know that but I was worried about his high rating though as he always carries 133 pounds.  In the Group 2 he carried 130 pounds and with his speed unlike in the sprint races he was going to get a very soft lead here. Tam said

I’ve been training him long steady staying work and he had in my opinion one of the best jockeys here in Roger (Yu) on top.  I wasn’t surprised that he ran well.”

Fasuba ran out the 1600 metres in 1.37.9 which was only .04 outside of the track record held by Luen Yat Everwin set in 2013.

Roger Yu is really riding with a ton of confidence of late and booted home a winning treble on Friday’s night’s card.

Yu who spent almost one year on the sidelines with a fractured vertebrae after falling from Duke De Vega in November last year, only returned to race riding at the end of September and has now posted nine winners for the new season.

Roger Yu’s night started with a massive win on the exciting Rothesay (Aus) three year old Golden Conqueror who simply destroyed his rivals in the first of the night the 3 & 4YO Handicap over 1050 metres.

Golden Conqueror has now won three races from only three starts and gave nothing else a hope from the word go on Friday night.

Prepared by the combined yard of Tommy Tse and Louis Ho, Golden Conqueror was an A$30,000 purchase at the 2016 Inglis Classic Yearling Sale in Sydney. The brown gelding is destined for bigger things judging by the ease of his win and the new class record time of 1.01.4.

Yu capped off his night with a narrow win on the Ricky Choi trained Association Eight who fought back tenaciously to win by a short head from race favorite Evergreen Pegasus (Luis Corrales), with Full Score (Shogo Nakano) close up in third.

Association Eight is one of four horses in training from the Macau Horse Owners Friendship Syndicate. All the horses are for sale by tender with Association Eight the first to win to date.

It was obvious from day one the son of Charm Spirit (Ire) had ability with a good third on debut behind the very smart Knows It All who has won four races from only six starts to date.

The win by Association Eight gave Ricky Choi his third win from the new season from only 21 runners. The former jockey is doing a fine job with his small team.
