Allendorf Eyes The Classics With Beauty Wink
2020-01-06 by Harry Troy

The great run of success continues for the Geoff Allendorf stable with another double on Saturdays turf race-card, with Beauty Wink and Luen On Poseidon to take him into a clear second spot with 15 winners in the trainer’s standings for the new season.

Allendorf’s exciting four year old Beauty Wink made it win number two from his four starts to date with an easy win in the first of the day the 0 to 55 Special Conditions Handicap over 1500 metres.

Fired out of the gates by Panamanian rider Oscar Chavez, Beauty Wink was always traveling on the bridle in the lead before racing away in the straight for an easy win.

Beauty Wink is a lovely looking son of Medaglia D’Oro (USA) from the Bel Esprit (Aus) mare Twin Star Rocket. Following two impressive barrier trial wins at Cranbourne under the name of Golden Shot, the gelding was earmarked for a career in Hong Kong. However it was found soon after that he was blind in the nearside eye. With Macau being one the few racing jurisdictions worldwide that accepts one eyed horses for competition, the gelding was packed off to Macau and cleverly renamed Beauty Wink.

Geoff Allendorf has ambitious long range plans for Beauty Wink with the Derby his ultimate goal.

“We’ll just take it as we go but yes the four year old classics like the Guineas would be the first, and then if we think he’ll get the trip then the Derby. He was strong at the end of the 1500 metres today and the time was good.”

Allendorf knows what it takes to win a Derby having won the race twice, firstly with Lucky And Wealthy in 2013 under German rider Andy Helfenbein, then again in 2016 with Turquoise Power ridden by Joao Moreira.

The luckless Luen On Poseidon had a welcome change of luck for Allendorf when he literally sprouted wings to power home right over the top of his rivals in the Class 2 Handicap over 1200 metres.

Ridden by South African jockey Tshwaro Appie, Luen On Poseidon stepped away from the gates the best he has in a long while and then settled in the back half of the field. Once in the straight Appie angled out wide and once into the clear Luen On Poseidon showed an amazing turn of foot to swamp the opposition to win in an exciting four way finish.

Trillion King (J B Hamel) got the bob in for second place with the even money race favorite You Are The Best (Roger Yu) a nose away in third.

As of now Tony Fung has a five win lead over Geoff Allendorf in the trainer’s race; last year’s Champion Stanley Chin is in third spot on 13 wins.

Thehorseiswithme is another one eyed gallop that would not be racing only for the liberal stance of the Macau Jockey Club on one eyed horses.

The son of I Am Invincible (Aus) returned to the winners circle after almost 12 months absence with a dazzling display of speed to run his opponents off their legs in the Class 3 & 4 over 1200 metres.

Ridden by the inform Roger Yu, Thehorseiswithme blazed away from the gates to lead clearly in his trademark style from the odds on race favorite Star Of Yiu Cheung (Horace Lam).

Star of Yiu Cheung chased gamely in the straight pulling a lot of ground off Thehorseiswithme, however the four year old was game to the end and prevailed by a head on the wire.

Thehorseiswithme was originally an A$145,000 purchase by Dynamic Syndications at the 2017 Melbourne Premier Sale. The then colt developed an eye problem in the nearside eye and he eventually lost the sight of it completely. He was then purchased by James Moore for owners Mr. Ng Kang So and Wong Kwan Tau; after given plenty of time to mature he was placed in the care of Alan Tam.

The gelding won five straight for Tam in four months starting in October 2018, before his form gradually tapered off. Saturdays run time of 1.08.8 which was .05 faster than the stronger Class 2 indicates that Tam has him back to his best.

Another eye caching performance on Saturday was the Patrick Lee trained The Prime Fortune who produced and amazing first to last performance to win the Class 4 & 5 over 1200 metres.

Ridden by Horace Lam, The Prime Fortune could not go a yard early and was a long last spotting the leaders 15 to 20 lengths mid race. Still a clear last approaching the turn the son of Rothesay (Aus) virtually jumped out of the ground wide out the last one fifty to snatch victory by a half length from Cheerful Fish (Peter Lao), with Sweet Buhman (Fausto Henrique) in third.

The three year old was a product of the 2018 Gold Coast Magic Millions 2YO’s in Training Sales, purchased for A$70,000 by Patrick Lee for owner Mr. Cham Ho Man.

The time of 1.09.6 was creditable for the grade being only .03 slower than the Class 2 won by Luen On Poseidon.
