Race Report

RACE-2 THE NAPIER RATING 45-25 (CLASS 4&5) 1500 METRES (305)

1 Ho Sai Lei (E Trujillo) –Was slow into stride.
4 Kelson (W Smith) – Shortly after the start rolled in and caused crowding .
6 Elo Seven (A Calder) –Was crowded for room shortly after the start when 4 Kelson rolled in and 7 Qipao Supreme rolled out. Jockey A Calder reported that after being crowded at the start his mount was having difficulty handling today’s track conditions and was one paced throughout the race and he was further back in the field than expected despite of his urgings.
7 Qipao Supreme (Y M Choi) – Shortly after the start rolled out and caused crowding . A post race veterinary examination failed to reveal any significant abnormality.
8 So Happy (A Aucharuz) –At the1300 metres turn laid in.

RACING INCIDENT & INQUIRY:
When questioned regarding the apparent change of tactics in comparison to 4 Kelson’s previous two starts, Jockey W Smith said that it was his first ride on 4 Kelson. He was instructed to get a good jump and go forward to be in 3rd or 4th position, or 2nd in a slow tempo. He mentioned that 4 Kelson was racing in blinkers for the first time. When questioned Trainer C F Chan said that at 4 Kelson’s previous two starts, he informed riders to go forward as he had instructed Jockey Smith today. However, previously due to the horse’s inexperience and the shorter distance of its previous races, 4 Kelson was unable to race in a forward position as it had today. He put it down to a longer distance and wearing blinkers on the first occasion today. He added that 4 Kelson was more tractable today in the slower tempo of the race. He was also of the opinion that the field was not as strong as at 4 Kelson’s last start which had allowed it to race more forward today. The Stewards noted their explanations.
