Race Report

RACE-5 THE MALTON (DIV. 2) RATING 85-60 (CLASS 2) 1350 METRES (100)

1 Falcoshow (A Calder) -A post race veterinary examination failed to reveal any significant abnormality. When questioned Jockey A Calder said that the horse traveled well until about the 700 metres from where the horse began to struggle. At the 600 metres he placed the horse under pressure but failed to run on as expected and was disappointing. When questioned Trainer Peter Leyshan said that the horse had two runs in class 2 and failed at both attempts. He added the horse raced further back in the field than usual and did not appreciate the kickback. Stewards noted his explanations. Trainer Peter Leyshan was informed that he would be required to present the horse for a full veterinary examination on Saturday, 13th January 2018.
2 Brave Flying Hawk (W L Ho) -Threw its head at the start and slow into start. When questioned Trainer Y C Fung he said he anticipated that this race will be a fast run race and from the barrier 11 he instructed Jockey W L Ho to ride 2 Brave Flying Hawk in mid field or where he is comfortable. Jockey W L Ho said the horse threw its head up at the start and jumped awkwardly and was slowed into stride and raced further back in the field than he anticipated. From barrier 11 he managed to get the horse over and raced near to the running rail and in the straight his horse only ran on fairly. Stewards noted their explanations.
3 Happy Vegetable (W Smith) - At the 1100 metres turn was taken wider o the track. A post race veterinary examination failed to reveal any significant abnormality.
5 Ultra Light Alloy (A Aucharuz) -A post race veterinary examination failed to reveal any significant abnormality.
6 Schilleraine (H Lam) -At the 1200 metres checked off the heels of 10 The Pirate King.
9 Grateful Favors (L Corrales) -Was slow into stride.
10 The Pirate King (M Wepner) -At the 1200 metres shifted in causing 6 Schilleraine to checked and lost ground. At the 1100 metres hung out and took 11 Eastern Paradise, 3 Happy Vegetable and 12 Eclair Infinity wider on the track.
11 Eastern Paradise (M Nunes) -At the 1100 metres turn was taken wider on the track.
12 Eclair Infinity (B Yamzon) - At the 1100 metres turn was taken wider on the track.

RACING INCIDENT & INQUIRY:
Jockey M Wepner the rider of 10 The Pirate King pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under MJC Rule 132 (i) in that 1200 metres he allowed his mount to shift in when not clear of 6 Schilleraine causing that horse to check and lost ground.
Jockey M Wepner was fined the sum of HK$7000 in lieu of one raceday suspension. In arriving at penalty the Stewards took into account his guilty plea, his record and the severity of the interference. He was notified his right of the appeal.
