Race Report

RACE-6 ICBC (MACAU) CHARITY TROPHY RATING 55-30 (CLASS 4) 1500 METRES (272)
This race was rescheduled to start at 2:15PM.

2 Off The Bench (W Smith) -Raced wide without cover until leaving the 800 metres. A post race veterinary examination failed to reveal any significant abnormality.
6 Fantastic Friends (L Corrales) -The Stewards questioned Jockey L Corrales with regards to the performance of 6 Fantastic Friends and in particular the reasons for it settling further back in the field than anticipated in the early stages. Jockey L Corrales explained that he was instructed to have a good jump and to try and obtain cover from the wide barrier. He added his mount jumped well and in accordance with his instructions he attempted to take his mount back to a position with cover, however in the early stages his mount showed no speed, dropped the bit and settled further back than he had anticipated. He added that racing down the back straight he had to continually niggle his mount along to improve its position and leaving the 700 metres he then applied the whip on a number of occasions to try and get 6 Fantastic Friends to pick up the bit and improve its position, however the gelding was very one paced. He further added that on entering the home straight, he brought 6 Fantastic Friends to the outside, however when placed under pressure 6 Fantastic Friends continued to race one paced and finished the race off only fairly. He concluded by saying that in his opinion 6 Fantastic Friends may not have been comfortable on today’s good track conditions and reported to the trainer that a drop back in class and switch back to the sand track may benefit 6 Fantastic Friends. After reviewing the patrol films, the Stewards noted Jockey L Corrales’ explanation.
8 Highspot (R Maia) -Raced fiercely in the early and middle stages. Leaving the 100 metres was momentarily disappointed for a run between 5 Anak which shifted in slightly and 1 Georgian Ease which shifted out under pressure.
9 Thunder Bear (S Nakano) -Marginally slow to begin. Near the 700 metres had to be eased away from the heels of 8 Highspot which was taken in by 2 Off The Bench which shifted in when not clear. Jockey W Smith the rider of 2 Off The Bench was issued with a severe reprimand and advised that he is to ensure he is sufficiently clear of runners when shifting ground in future.
