Race Report

RACE-1 THE NOVA IGUACU RATING 35-0 (CLASS 5&6) 1050 METRES (242)

2 Treasure Honey (M Tanaka) -Jumped away awkwardly and shortly after the start brushed with 3 Turquoise Square. Leaving the 500 metres was inclined to hang out and continued to do so until entering the home straight. Rider reported that his mount which has having its first start, raced greenly throughout and he was disappointed in the way the gelding finished the race off in that it was very one paced. A post race veterinary examination failed to reveal any significant abnormality.
3 Turquoise Square (W H Lao) -Shortly after the start brushed with 2 Treasure Honey when taken in by 5 Master Paradise which shifted in slightly. A post race veterinary examination failed to reveal any significant abnormality.
4 Circuit Guy (L Corrales) -Sprawled on jumping away.
6 Ventures Elite (Apprentice C L Cheung) -Near the 800 metres was inclined to lay in for some distance after being brushed by 5 Master Paradise which shifted out slightly. Raced wide without cover throughout. Was inclined to lay in under pressure in the home straight.
10 Luen On Warrior (B Yamzon) -Approaching the 100 metres when inclined to lay in under pressure, shifted in slightly and had to be steadied away from the heels of 7 Chapman Way which at the same time commenced to give ground and shifted out slightly. As Stewards could not portion blame to anyone rider, the Stewards took no further action other than to advise Jockey Y M Choi the rider of 7 Chapman Way to exercise more care in similar circumstances and to ensure he makes a greater effort to keep his mounts on a straight course.
11 Cookson (W L Ho) -Near the 150 metres had to be checked. Whilst the Stewards noted that 11 Cookson was checked near the 150 metres Jockey W L Ho was nevertheless reminded of his obligations to ride all his mounts to the finish of the race.

RACING INCIDENT & INQUIRY:
The Stewards inquired into an incident near the 150 metres whereby 11 Cookson had to be checked and 8 Cushie Butterfield was hampered. Evidence was taken from the riders of 2 Treasure Honey (M Tanaka), 11 Cookson (W L Ho) and 8 Cushie Butterfield (D Barros). Jockey M Tanaka the rider of 2 Treasure Honey pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under MJC Rule 132 (i) in that near the 150 metres he permitted his mount to shift in when insufficiently clear of 11 Cookson which had to be checked and in turn was taken in onto 8 Cushie Butterfield which was hampered. Jockey M Tanaka’s license to ride in races was suspended for 1 racemeeting covering the meeting of 23 August 2020 and in addition he was issued with a monetary fine of HKD8,000 in lieu of 1 additional racemeeting. In arriving at penalty, the Stewards took into account his guilty plea, his riding record, the degree of the interference and his average earnings. He was advised of his Right of Appeal.
