Race Report
RACE-4 THE LEYTON ORIENT RATING 70-40 (CLASS 2&3) 1800 METRES (92)

1 Nuclear Fusion (W L Ho) -Jumped away awkwardly and lost ground. Cast both front plates.
2 Qian Gua (B Yamzon) -Jumped away awkwardly and was then slow into stride. Near the 850 metres had to be eased away from the heels of 4 The Macallan which shifted in when not fully clear. Jockey S Ladjadj the rider of 4 The Macallan was advised to exercise more care in similar circumstances in future. Near the 300 metres had to be steadied away from the heels of 4 The Macallan which shifted out under pressure when weakening.
4 The Macallan (S Ladjadj) -Raced wide without cover until taking up the leading position near the 850 metres. Rider reported he rode his mount positively out of the barriers in an endeavor to take up the lead position, however when attempting to cross to the running rail near the 1500 metres 2 Qian Gua and 3 Circuit Miles had improved to his inside which resulted in 4 The Macallan being caught racing three wide without cover. He added he considered restraining his mount leaving the 1400 metres however this would have resulted in 4 The Macallan still being caught in a three wide position, so he elected to allow 4 The Macallan to stride forward and take the lead near the 800 metres albeit having to use up more energy than he would have liked. He further added that the energy used in the early and middle stages contributed to 4 The Macallan tiring in the home straight. A post race veterinary examination failed to reveal any significant abnormality.
5 Bring Me Glory (K H Yu) -Jumped away awkwardly and made contact with the outside barrier partition. Near the 1500 metres hung out across the heels of 8 Star Of City Gold and had to be checked.
6 Eclair Hunter (L Corrales) -Near the 1400 metres was momentarily eased when tightened for room between 3 Circuit Miles and 2 Qian Gua which was inclined to lay in and away from 4 The Macallan.
7 Fantastic Friends (M Tanaka) -Raced wide without cover from the 750 metres.
8 Star Of City Gold (C L Cheung) -Approaching the 50 metres was inclined to shift out under pressure.
9 Hyshem (T Appie) -Was slow into stride. Near the 200 metres was momentarily steadied when racing in restricted room to the inside of 4 The Macallan which shifted in when weakening.

RACING INCIDENT & INQUIRY:
The Stewards inquired into the running and handling of 2 Qian Gua (B Yamzon), in particular the tactics adopted in the early and middle stages of the race. Jockey B Yamzon stated that he was instructed to go forward and obtain the lead position on the running rail as 2 Qian Gua had performed best when able to lead in its races. He stated after his mount began awkwardly and was slow into stride, he then elected to ride his mount vigorously in order to obtain a forward position. He stated that approaching the winning post on the first occasion, he noticed both horses 3 Circuit Miles and 6 Eclair Hunter being steadied and as they were not noted leaders and to comply with his instructions, he continued to ride his mount vigorously in order to cross both runners and obtain the lead position on the running rail. He added near the 1500 metres he was able to cross 6 Eclair Hunter, however as 3 Circuit Miles had maintained its position to his inside, he was unable to cross to the running rail and as 4 The Macallan which was positioned to his outside continued to improve forward, he then elected to sustain his run and cross 3 Circuit Miles with the anticipation of giving his mount a breather once crossing to the running rail. He further added that he was able to cross 3 Circuit Miles near the 1200 metres and anticipated 4 The Macallan then obtaining the lead, however as that runner did not immediately take up that position, he then elected to ride his mount forward, however as 4 The Macallan then began to improve he then allowed that runner to eventually cross leaving the 850 metres. Jockey Yamzon further stated that after viewing the films and in hindsight he had made an error of judgement in that after crossing 3 Circuit Miles near the 1200 metres he should have restrained his mount to allow 4 The Macallan cross to the lead and give his mount some respite. After considering all of the circumstances, the Stewards were of the opinion that after 2 Qian Gua had jumped away awkwardly and was then slow into stride, Jockey B Yamzon should have taken up a position behind 3 Circuit Miles and 6 Eclair Hunter in the early stages towards the running rail, however after taking into account his explanation as to why he had urged his mount along at that point of the race, the Stewards were of the opinion that the tactics adopted under the circumstances were not unreasonable. Trainer K H Leong confirmed the instructions and stated that in his opinion 2 Qian Gua performs best when being able to lead in its races and added that after viewing the films and after 2 Qian Gua was slow into stride he would have been satisfied had 2 Qian Gua obtained a position with cover behind 3 Circuit Miles and 6 Eclair Hunter in the early stages. The Stewards also concurred with Jockey Yamzon that after having crossed 3 Circuit Miles near the 1200 metres, he had erred in not restraining his mount to allow 2 Qian Gua respite, however they were of the opinion that this error of judgment was not blameworthy under the rules and therefore took no further action other than to remind him of his obligations to ride all his mounts in such a manner as to leave no room for query. The Stewards also advised Trainer K H Leong that when issuing instructions to jockeys he is to ensure that the instructions are adequate and allow riders the flexibility to adapt to the circumstances that may eventuate during a race.
