Race Report

RACE-1 THE ST. HELENS RATING 55-0 (CLASS 4,5&6) 1200 METRES (85)

1 Double Heaven (L Salles) –Was slow to begin.
2 A Perfect Gift (K H Yu) –Fractious in the barriers and was subsequently cleared to race by the Veterinary Surgeon. Checked after the start. Leaving the 500 metres commenced to hang out and continued to do so in the home straight. Trainer J Lau was informed that a warning had been placed against 2 A Perfect Gift for its racing manners. A post race veterinary examination failed to reveal any significant abnormality.
3 Dr Definitely (A Aucharuz) –Was slow to begin.
4 Go Go Partners (W L Ho) –Was resaddled behind the barriers. From the 500 metres to the 400 metres had to be steadied when awkwardly placed on the heels of 1 Double Heaven. Leaving the 250 metres was held up and unable to improve when disappointed for a run between 7 Luen On Treasure and 5 Californiatreasure. Was then obliged to shift out near the 150 metres to obtain clear running.
6 Who's My Fan (C Perkins) – Checked off the heels of 4 Go Go Partners near the 150 metres.
8 Lucky Gladiator (R Maia) –Was slow to begin.
9 Wealthy Treasure (L Corrales) –Steadied near the 1100 metres when awkwardly placed on the heels of 5 Californiatreasure which shifted in when not quite clear. Jockey R Curatolo the rider of 5 Californiatreasure was issued with a severe reprimand and advised that he must ensure he is sufficiently clear when shifting ground at all times.
12 Brilliant Cash (W H Lao) –Raced wide without cover throughout.

RACING INCIDENT & INQUIRY:
The Stewards considered an objection lodged by Jockey W L Ho the rider of 4 Go Go Partners, the 2nd placed horse against 5 Californiatreasure (R Curatolo) being declared the winner alleging interference shortly after the start. After taking evidence from both riders and reviewing the official patrol films, it was established that shortly after the start 5 Californiatreasure which had jumped away awkwardly, hung out resulting in 2 A Perfect Gift being tightened for room, and was then taken out onto 4 Go Go Partners which was hampered and became unbalanced. 10 Impeccable Genius which was positioned outside of 4 Go Go Partners was checked in consequence. After considering all the circumstances in particular the point of the race where the incident took place, the Stewards could not be completely satisfied that had the intereference suffered to 4 Go Go Partners not taken place, 4 Go Go Partners would have beaten 5 Californiatreasure and as such the objection was dismissed and correct weight was declared.

At a subsequent inquiry, the Stewards could not attribute sole blame to the actions of Jockey R Curatolo in this incident, however nevertheless advised Jockey R Curatolo to exercise more care in similar circumstances in future. Furthermore after considering the racing manners of 5 Californiatreasure, the Stewards informed Trainer K H Leong that a warning had been placed against the gelding.

Jockey W L Ho the rider of 4 Go Go Partners pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under MJC Rule 132 (i) in that near the 150 metres he permitted his mount to shift out when insufficiently clear of 6 Who's My Fan (C Perkins) which had to be checked and lost ground. Jockey W L Ho’s licence to ride in races was suspended for a period of two racemeetings, covering the meetings of 16th and 30th December 2016. He was advised of his Right of Appeal. In arriving at penalty the Stewards took into account his guilty plea, his recent record in regards to this rule and the degree of the interference.
