Race Report

RACE-3 4YO Prelude (GROUP 3) OPEN No Freelance/Apprentice Jockeys Allowances 1500 METRES (185)

1 Obrigado Mais (W Smith) –Raced wide from the 600 metres and near the 500 metres was forced extremely wide when 6 Wudang Mountain shifted out to improve. Performed below market expectations. Rider reported his mount never travelled comfortably and may not have appreciated today’s track conditions.
2 Hostwin Galaxy (M Wepner) –Was slow to begin. Over the final 50 metres was hampered by 5 Mission Gdragon which shifted out under pressure.
7 Baby Horse (H Lam) –A post race veterinary examination failed to reveal any significant abnormality.
9 Eclair Journey (A Calder) – Near the 250 metres was steadied when disappointed for a run between 3 Feast For Eyes and 5 Mission Gdragon. Was then unable to establish clear running until leaving the 200 metres.
10 The Moon's Back (A Aucharuz) –Buffeted shortly after the start between 1 Obrigado Mais and 5 Mission Gdragon, both of which shifted ground.

RACING INCIDENT & INQUIRY:
The “Enquiry” sign was semaphored to allow the Stewards to view the official patrol film of the final 100 metres and at the same time heard an objection lodged by Jockey M Wepner the rider of 2 Hostwin Galaxy (5th placegetter) against 5 Mission Gdragon (R Curatolo) being declared 4th place alleging interference in the home straight. It was established that leaving the 50 metres 5 Mission Gdragon shifted out under pressure and made contact with 2 Hostwin Galaxy on a number of occasions. After considering all of the circumstances and taking into account the beaten margin, the Stewards were not comfortably satisfied that had the interference not taken place 2 Hostwin Galaxy would have finished ahead of 5 Mission Gdragon and as such the objection was overruled and correct weight was declared on the Judge’s placings.

At a subsequent inquiry, Jockey R Curatolo the rider of 5 Mission Gdragon pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under MJC Rule 132 (i) in that leaving the 50 metres whilst riding his mount along and using the whip, he failed to make sufficient effort to prevent his mount from shifting out resulting in 5 Mission Gdragon making contact with 2 Hostwin Galaxy on a number of occasions and was hampered. Jockey R Curatolo’s licence to ride in races was suspended for a period of two racemeetings to cover the meetings of 24th and 25th of March 2017. In arriving at penalty the Stewards took into account his guilty plea, his riding record and the degree of the interference. He was advised of his Right of Appeal.
