HISTORY OF ASCOT RACECOURSE
"Ascot is home to Perth’s horse racing industry with some of Western Australia’s greatest horse races held at the venue. The racecourse hosts the state’s summer and autumn racing carnivals in March/April and November/December.
The racecourse is located 8km east of the Perth city centre and The Western Australian Turf Club is located directly opposite. The racecourse features beautiful gardens and first class facilities including an interstate and local bookmakers ring. There is also an open sided pavilion the length of the Main Tote.
The Ascot Races is Western Australia’s premier racing venue, and the home of thoroughbred racing in WA.
About Ascot racetrack:
Circumference is 2022 metres, length of the home straight is 294 metres inclining. Racing is in an anti-clockwise direction. Races are held from 1,000 metres up to 2,400 metres with inside barriers having a slight advantage in races over 1,400 metres and 1,500 metres and an advantage over 1,000 metres, 1,100 metres, 1,600 metres and 1,800 metres.
Characteristics:
one of the smaller courses in Australia, inside barriers are an advantage as there is little time to make up ground in the home straight so winners are often those in the leading division. Temperatures in Perth can often be very warm and some horses handle this better than others.
Experts agree that Ascot's 2022m circumference is Australia's toughest challenge for stayers, mainly because its 294m straight is on an uphill slope. "
