KENILWORTH RACECOURSE :TURF

As the oldest racecourse in the country, Kenilworth is steeped in tradition and history. With its enviable geographic location and beauty, it has long been a favourite racing venue among both South African and overseas visitors.

The course has three separate tracks. The undulating 1200m straight is acknowledged as being the most testing sprint track in the country. There are two round courses; the “old” track, measuring 2700m in circumference with 450m run-in, is used primarily for autumn and winter racing. The “new” track measuring 2800m around with 600m run-in. Draw generally of little significance, but wet going can impact on draw in races down the straight.

It also hosts the running of the Queen's Plate over 1600m which is the oldest feature race on the South African horse racing calendar. It was raced for the 149th time on Saturday, January 9, 2010.

Race Preview (Kenilworth)

Kenilworth, 03.06.2020, Race 1, Gallops, 1000m, Turf, R40.000, 6:30PM

Race Summary: Western Cape resumes with a competitive 2yo maiden which features a number of well-bred newcomers. The betting should provide a guide to the chances of each. Reserve runners FALCON and SPRING AWAKENING must be respected if taking their place in the lineup - both are well bred and likely to be above average. JET DARK is another interesting newcomer with a good pedigree and represents the formidable Snaith-Fourie combination. Of the raced runners, WINTER FLIGHT makes most appeal after two forward showings, including a last-start 2nd over track and trip. TARANTINO should improve to have a say.

Kenilworth, 03.06.2020, Race 2, Gallops, 1000m, Turf, R40.000, 7:00PM

Race Summary: FIFTYSHADESDARKER finished ahead of consistent STUCK ON YOU in a 2yo feature earlier this year and, with improvement likely, could make amends for a disappointing last start (beaten odds-on favourite) by confirming superiority. I'M A LADY caught the eye when running on late to finish 2nd on debut. She would've have come on since so must be respected, which can also be said of improving FRENCH FLING who has the form to play a role. Newcomer IN YOUR TIME is a very well-related daughter of Dynasty and is bred to be special. Watch the betting! CATCHING STARS and KISS OF LIFE have outside chances.

Kenilworth, 03.06.2020, Race 3, Gallops, 1000m, Turf, R40.000, 7:35PM

Race Summary: The fillies could dominate this in receipt of weight. HELLO TOMORROW finished 2nd over course and distance when competing against male rivals two starts back, the second of three consecutive runner-up finishes over track and trip. She wouldn't be winning out of turn and another competitive showing can be expected. ANMER HALL would have come on with the experience of her (1400m) debut 4th and could improve to have a say in the outcome. LOOKS LIKE MAGIC has shown pace in races over further so this drop in distance could suit. Newcomer SAKURA TRICK is nicely bred and needn't be special to feature.

Kenilworth, 03.06.2020, Race 4, Gallops, 1400m, Turf, R40.000, 8:10PM

Race Summary: Open. TAMBORA wasn't beaten far in a similar contest on handicap debut last time out and should be involved again with a repeat of that effort. On that form, SMART WILLIAM and BRANDENBURG could have a say on these terms but both need to overcome wide draws to do so. BLACK BELT, holding form at this level, was unlucky not to have finished closer last time (wide draw) but should be competitive in this from a favourable gate. CYBER LAW is likely to go forward from wide under a 4kg claimer and could surprise. Last-start winner MIDNIGHT BADGER and unexposed SOCKEROO (gelded now) have claims too.

Kenilworth, 03.06.2020, Race 5, Gallops, 1400m, Turf, R40.000, 8:50PM

Race Summary: Good race. LATE AT NIGHT is a useful 3yo with scope for improvement. He is, however, held on the form of his last start by consistent ORAKAL who makes more appeal under his rider's 4kg claim. ROYAL RETURN confirmed his ability with solid post-maiden efforts and appears the pick of the 3yo brigade under a lightweight with blinkers now fitted. Hard-knockers ROCKIN' RINGO and PINK FLOYD are consistent at this level of the handicap and proven over this trip, so could pose a threat. WAITING FOR RAIN seldom runs a bad race so can’t be ignored, despite a wide draw. FATEFUL has earning potential too.

Kenilworth, 03.06.2020, Race 6, Gallops, 1400m, Turf, R40.000, 9:25PM

Race Summary: Competitive. HEAVEN'S EMBRACE is both versatile and consistent, and an honest account can be expected of her. She does, however, concede chunks of weight to all and could be found wanting late on under 63kg. The Bass-Robinson yard has a strong hand and stablemates CRUISE ALONG and GIMME GIMME GIMME are likely to play leading roles. They're closely matched on recent meetings but the former is better off on these terms and favourably drawn, so is narrowly preferred. SWEET KARMA is a useful third string to the stable's bow under just 50kg. CARIBBEAN SUNSET has solid form credentials too. Include!

Kenilworth, 03.06.2020, Race 7, Gallops, 1000m, Turf, R40.000, 10:00PM

Race Summary: Undoubtedly the race of the day with a lineup littered with top-level performers and three Grade 1 scorers. RUSSET AIR edged BOLD RESPECT to win the Gr.1 Cape Fly over track and trip on Met day and there shouldn't be much between the pair again on similar weight terms. RUN FOX RUN lost her unbeaten record in that race but acquitted herself well nonetheless. She isn't weighted to turn the tables but does have plenty scope for improvement, so will give the boys something to fear. Both PACIFIC TRADER and CLOUDS UNFOLD are Grade 1 winners more than capable of staking a claim over this distance.

Kenilworth, 03.06.2020, Race 8, Gallops, 1200m, Turf, R40.000, 10:35PM

Race Summary: The fillies could hold sway in the 'lucky last' as rejuvenated FOURS A CROWD and impressive last-start winner DARK MISTRESS appear most likely to fight out the finish. The former has done little wrong since joining her current yard and beat a stronger field (albeit females) last time out. A resultant four-point penalty and switch to taking on male rivals pose tougher questions but could well be answered by the shrewd booking of a 4kg claimer. DARK MISTRESS seemingly relished the return to sprints with blinkers fitted last time (when well backed) and on that evidence should pose a threat.
