New Racing Season Greetings from Mr Thomas Li, Executive Director & Chief Executive Officer of MJC |
Dear Owners, Members, Trainers and Jockeys, the 2019/2020 season have been full of challenges. The COVID-19 epidemic has affected the horse racing industry globally; fortunately, the Macao SAR Government is able to prevent the virus from spreading and with the cooperation of the Club and the perseverance of our staff, horse racing in Macau has been able to run normally. In the meantime, the Government has approved 66 race meetings for the new Racing Season 2020/2021, which remains the same despite the epidemic and will continue to entertain the horse racing fans. Due to the epidemic, betting turnover have fallen by about 22% compared to the 2018/2019 season; however, the race days attendance in February were the highest in recent years, which shows that the epidemic has not affected the public support for horse racing and the interest of fans in has not been diminished.
To usher the new Racing Season, the Turf track upgrade project has officially started on 25 August 2020. The project is aim to construct drainage trench for the Turf track to improve the drainage capability. The project is progressing smoothly, and will complete sooner than expected. Turf races can be scheduled as soon as the project is fully completed. According to the weather data, there was a red rainstorm warning signal on 8 September during the construction; it was found that the drainage capability has improved by 4.8%, which has proved that the project will certainly bring better race track.
Commingling Pools has been proven to be the way of horse racing entertainment for the future. The Club is also discussing with our partners in Malaysia and Singapore, therefore overseas broadcasting will be fine tuned for time being.
Shipment for horses has also been affected by the epidemic. We can only schedule four or five shipments for the time being. We are hoping that more shipment can be scheduled in the future, to ship more horses into Macau as soon as possible.
Another major project for the new Racing Season is the upgrade of the indicator board. The project has been implemented and is in progress. The new LED screen will provide clearer picture for the fans to enjoy the races.
I wish we can work together and scale new heights in the new season.
