Race Report

RACE-6 THE MANCHESTER RATING 55-25 (CLASS 4) 1800 METRES (150)

1 Techfaith Warrior (W Smith) -Near the 75 metres had to be checked away from the heels of 4 Thunder Bear which shifted in when insufficiently clear. Over the final 50 metres was held up and unable to establish clear running when racing in restricted room to the inside of 4 Thunder Bear which was inclined to lay in and away from 2 Georgian Ease which shifted in slightly over the concluding stages. Jockey F Henrique the rider of 2 Georgian Ease was advised to exercise more care and to ensure he prevents his mount from shifting ground in similar circumstances in future.
3 Iced Jade (B Yamzon) -Raced fiercely in the early and middle stages. Near the 50 metres had to be steadied when tightened for room between 10 Taolu Expert and 7 Stallion Treasure which was taken out slightly by 5 Delighted Solution which shifted out marginally. After considering all of the circumstances in particular Apprentice C L Cheung’s explanation that he was responding to the call of a rider to his inside at the point of the incident, the Stewards took no further action other than to advise Apprentice C L Cheung to exercise more care in similar circumstances in future. A post race veterinary examination failed to reveal any significant abnormality.
7 Stallion Treasure (W L Ho) -Rounding the home turn was disappointed for a run between 9 Flying Team and 10 Taolu Expert and as a result bumped 9 Flying Team on a number of occasions. Was then held up and unable to establish clear running until near the 100 metres. Near the 50 metres was eased and taken outwards by 5 Delighted Solution which shifted out slightly.
8 Vancouver Jaguar (L Corrales) -Was slow to begin.
9 Flying Team (O Chavez) -Bumped by 1 Techfaith Warrior shortly after the start. Raced wide rounding the home turn and was bumped by 7 Stallion Treasure on a number of occasions.
10 Taolu Expert (R Maia) -Raced wide without cover leaving the 500 metres. A post race veterinary examination failed to reveal any significant abnormality.

RACING INCIDENT & INQUIRY:
The Stewards considered an objection lodged by Jockey W Smith the rider of 1 Techfaith Warrior which was placed 6th against 4 Thunder Bear (J Pescuiso) which was declared 3rd place by the Judge, alleging interference over the final 75 metres. Evidence was taken from Jockeys W Smith and J Pescuiso, and all the official patrol films available were viewed. It was established that near the 75 metres 4 Thunder Bear shifted in when insufficiently clear resulting in 1 Techfaith Warrior losing its rightful running and had to be checked away from that runner’s heels. It was then established that over the final 50 metres 1 Techfaith Warrior was held up and unable to establish clear running when racing in restricted room to the inside of 4 Thunder Bear which was inclined to lay in and away from 2 Georgian Ease which shifted in slightly over the concluding stages. After considering all of the circumstances and taking into consideration the beaten margin of 3 quarters of a length, the Stewards could not be comfortably satisfied that had the interference not occurred that 1 Techfaith Warrior would have beaten 4 Thunder Bear and as such dismissed the objection and declared correct weight on the Judge’s placings.

At a subsequent inquiry, Jockey J Pescuiso pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under MJC Rule 132 (i) in that near the 75 metres he permitted his mount to shift in when insufficiently clear of 1 Techfaith Warrior resulting in that horse losing its rightful running and having to be checked. Jockey J Pescuiso’s license to ride in races was suspended for 1 racemeeting covering the meeting of Friday, 22 February 2019. In arriving at penalty the Stewards took into account Jockey J Pescuiso’s disciplinary record, his guilty plea, the degree of interference, the racing manners of 4 Thunder Bear and also his attempt to correct his mount at the point of the incident. He was advised of his Right Of Appeal.
