Race Report

RACE-5 THE GILGANDRA RATING 45-20 (CLASS 4&5) 1200 METRES (217)

1 Hostwin Jupiter (Y M Choi) - Was slightly slow into stride. A post race veterinary examination failed to reveal any significant abnormality.
3 City Gold Lodge (C Perkins) - Shifted out when hanging out in the straight.
5 Snow Dragon (M Alvarez) - Raced keenly in the back straight and laid out rounding the home turn, presenting a run to the second-place getter 8 Half Lamma Rainbow.
6 Freetowon (S H Huang) - Commenced awkwardly and lost some ground. At the latter part of the home turn, was momentarily eased when 10 Winnie Star shifted out abruptly to obtain a clear running.
9 Shaibanat (K F Choi) - Trainer K C Tse advised Stewards that previously he had been instructing riders to go forward, however the horse had not been finishing off races. He said from its wide barrier today, he would instruct the rider to settle at mid-field position to allow it finish off the race. Ridden accordingly.

RACING INCIDENT & INQUIRY:

Stewards questioned Apprentice A Liu, in the presence of his master G Allendorf, regarding the tactics he adopted on 4 For Community between the 400 metres and until passing the 300 metres, in particular why he did not attempt to improve into a run that presented between 8 Half Lamma Rainbow and 5 Snow Dragon after passing the 400 metres and, why he showed a lack of vigor in the early part of the straight. He explained that he was instructed to lead or settle the gelding where it was comfortable, and then place it under full pressure at the 200 metres, and that he was riding to instructions. He said that when he placed the gelding under hard riding at the 200 metres it failed to respond and was disappointing in that regard.

Trainer S Chow confirmed the instructions noting the horse has only a short finishing run and advised that he had supported the horse today.

Whilst having concern with Apprentice A Liu’s lack of vigor between the 400 metres and until passing the 300 metres, in deciding not to take action against him, Stewards were mindful that he is an inexperienced apprentice following instructions, and that after viewing the films, he agreed that he should have placed his mount under some pressure when the run presented and should have shown more vigor in the early part of the straight.
