Race Report

RACE-1 THE WASHINGTON (Div.2) RATING 35-0 (CLASS 5&6) 1800 METRES (133)

1 Akeli Sword (C L Cheung)- Beaten in excess of 33 lengths. Rider stated that his mount may be better suited on the sand track. A post race veterinary examination failed to reveal any significant abnormality. Trainer M C Tam was informed that in view of the performance of 1 Akeli Sword, it will not be permitted to race for 11 days and until such time that it has performed to the satisfaction of the Stewards in an official Barrier Trial and a veterinary certificate is produced.
3 Wealthy Sun (B Yamzon)- Hung out rounding the turn near the 1200 metres.
5 Famous Man (K F Choi)- Bounded on jumping, shifted in and bumped 3 Wealthy Sun. Raced ungenerously through the early stages. Laid out rounding the home turn permitting 8 Hundred Victories a run to the inside. Perform below market expectation, rider stated that the gelding fail to see out today’s distance and in his opinion would be suited to races of a shorter distance.
7 Grande Fortune (Apprentice A Liu)- Shortly after the start shifted out and brushed 9 Restarted.
9 Restarted (Y M Choi)- Approaching the winning post on the first occasion raced in restricted room to the inside of 7 Grande Fortune. Then after passing the winning post, was steadied to avoid the heels of 2 Twin Cam (K H Yu) which shifted in when not quite clear. Jockey K H Yu was reprimanded and notified that he must make a greater effort to protect his fellow riders when in similar circumstances in the future. On several occasions in the middle stages had to be steadied when close to heels. Was held up when unable to improve on its position rounding the home turn. At the 300 metres had to change course when disappointed for a run between 4 Beautiful Beach and 5 Famous Man.
10 Guillocharm (S H Huang)- Stewards questioned Jockey S H Huang regarding his riding in the latter part of the home turn and the early part of the straight, in particular as to why he did not attempt to improve into a run that presented between 6 Mountain Eagle and 2 Twin Cam after straightening. Jockey S H Huang explained that prior to straightening, he was unable to come to the outside of 2 Twin Cam, as at that point he would have caused interference to 6 Mountain Eagle, and that when the run initially presented, he was reluctant to place his mount under full pressure as he was of the opinion, it might shift ground. He added that 10 Guillocharm raced with its head up and did not really stretch out and also received some tightening after passing the 300 metres. The Stewards acknowledged that Jockey S H Huang was unable to improve at the latter part of the home turn, however they notified him that he should have attempted to improve at the top of the straight when the run presented between 6 Mountain Eagle and 2 Twin Cam. Jockey S H Huang was notified that he must ensure he rides his all his mounts in such a manner as to leave no room for query.
