SJM MACAU DERBY (GROUP 1) Form Comments
2021-07-21 13:08

City Gold
A winner of four races straight on the all -weather before producing a big finish to win the Guineas (Gr1) on June 27 on a heavy track.  He is a son of the 2013 Breeders Cup (turf) winner Outstrip, from a Dubawi mare so the 1800 metres of the Derby will suit ideally. On breeding will handle a good track as well. Looks the complete racehorse and will run one of the favorites.

Simon Fubuki
Arrived from Australia with a maiden win over 1950 metres at Yarra Glen on a heavy track, and three placed efforts from 11 starts.  Has done a good job since arriving in Macau with three wins, one at 1500 metres (turf) good track and two on the sand at 1510 metres. Disappointing 9/11 beaten 15 lens in the Guineas on the heavy track, but was three wide the trip. Has been working very well of late.

Hostwin Achilles
Bred along sprinting lines being by Deep Field. Scored a surprise win in the Derby Trial (Gr 3) on a good track over the more fancied stablemate Circuit Miles on May 29. Backed that up again with a strong effort for a neck second to City Gold in the Guineas on a heavy track.  Will take up a handy position in the run, but the 1800 metres could be a concern.

Captain Brentford
Has done a fine job since arriving from New Zealand with only fair form. A winner of four straight on the all weather with three at 1510 metres and one at 1350 metres.  Placed twice at 1500 metres (turf) best being 2nd to Pursuing Eagle on a yielding track in April. Breeding suggests he will run the trip, and will be forward in the run, but does tend to over race in his runs which might be a drawback for a strong 1800 metres

Circuit Miles
A winner over 1400 metres at Kembla Grange and placed up to 2200 metres Bendigo in Australia before coming to Macau.  Good win over 1800 metres back on April 10 and followed that with solid ½ len - 2nd to Hostwin Achilles in the Derby Trial and 2 lens - 3rd to City Gold in the Guineas.  Derby distance looks ideal, while he handles soft, would prefer a good track.

A definite top three chance.

Partners Fortune
Has done a fine job winning six races, five at 1200 and the latest a strong win at 1500 Class 2 on a heavy track beating Luen On Poseidon June 27. In that win he ran full second quicker than the Guineas taken out by City Gold.  Had a wide tough run in the Derby Trial 1500 good track, but stayed on well only beaten 4 ¾ lens.  Gives every indication he will run a strong 1800 metres and handles any type of track.

Cherry Road
Has done a good job to win five races to date, two at 1500 metres (turf) on good tracks.  Ridden closer on the speed and failed to run on when 5th beaten 3 ¼ lens Hostwin Achilles in the Derby Trial, and then failed dismally on the heavy track behind City Gold in the Guineas.

Breeding suggests that 1800 metres is not beyond him, perhaps a minor hope at best if the track comes up good.

Association Eight
A winner of four races two of those at 1500 metres, and the latest at 1800 metres beating Fortune Lady on 27/06/21 on a heavy track.  Will race on speed, but does look out of his depth here on the equal weights, unless the track comes up very heavy.

Snow Storm
A winner of four of his five starts including the last four in a row; the latest on July 3rd.  A very promising horse that is still on the way up and has not yet reached his peak rating.  Can take up a handy position in the run and has a strong finish. Appears to handle any ground. Trainer Joe Lau is looking for his fifth Derby victory. Must be rated a top chance on what we have seen so far.

Hostwin Sunlight
A winner over 1800 metres at the Gold Coast in Australia before coming to Macau. Led throughout to win over 1500 metres defeating Ocean Warrior on a good track on May 22nd then latest led them up in the Guineas on a heavy track before fading late for 6th beaten 6 ¾ lens to City Gold.  The likely leader in the race, but looks to be about his peak rating now, and will struggle on the equal weight scale.

Yiucheung Champion
Nice horse that has not reached his peak rating as yet. A winner at 1800 metres on a good track on April 24 then followed a solid effort for 6th only 3 ¾ lens away from Hostwin Achilles in the Derby Trial after not getting a clear run.  No luck in running again in the Guineas after slow getaway and held up down the side, before running on very well for 5th beaten 5 ¼ lens City Gold.

Will take up a forward position over 1800 and is the dark horse in the race. Great value player.

Ocean Warrior
Honest type that that has won three races at 1500 metres and has an almost 50% place strike rate in his 19 starts.  Is well out of it at the ratings, but is bred to run the trip right out and handles all ground. Will be forward in the run.

Beauty Bolt
Beautifully bred mare and by far the best credentialled horse in the race with three wins and two placings from 10 starts in Australia, including a 5th place in the E Manifold (Gr 2) at Flemington over 1600 metres and 4th in the $1million VRC Oaks beaten 6.25 lens over 2500 metres. Ran 3rd in the Derby Trial behind Hostwin Achilles and 4th in the Guineas behind City Gold, on both occasions was running on well late.

The 1800 metres will be ideal and whilst she gets through soft ground, is definitely better on a good track. The one to beat.

Stand-by

Fortune Lady
Another honest type and the second mare in the race. A winner of four races from 16 runs including latest over 1800 defeating The Macallan on a good track. Races forward and handles all types of ground but greatly disadvantaged at the ratings.

Tuhao Choice
A winner of five races in Macau – all of those on the sand. Placed 2nd three times at 1500 metres turf early on. Never competitive in the Derby Trial beaten 9 ¼ lens, and then 7/11 beaten 12 lens on the Guineas. Way out of his depth here.

City Gold Income
Australian import who won a 1200 metre maiden at Seymour in Victoria. A winner at 1200 metres in Macau on March 6. Produced a tidy effort in the Derby Trial after making the pace and held on well for 4th only 1 ½ lens away.  Then disappointed in the Guineas after racing on lead for a weakening 8/11 beaten 13 lengths on the heavy track.  Looks out of his depth here.
