Double Caps a Big Week For Allendorf
2017-03-20 by Harry Troy

A winning double on Saturday’s turf race card has capped off a nice week for trainer Geoff Allendorf.

Allendorf who celebrated his 60th birthday last Wednesday, got off to a nice start Saturday when Power Savabeel under Andrew Calder made light work of his wide gate to win the 2017 Macauslot Charity Trophy over 1500 metres.

In a classic ride by Calder, Power Savabeel was set alight out of the gates to cross and sit outside the leader Concentration after the first one hundred metres. Once Concentration was let roll forward Calder slotted Power Savabeel into the box seat fourth on the fence. Once in the straight Calder found an opening between runners to dart away for an easy win.

Whilst it was only Power Savabeel’s third race win he has managed to place a further seven times albeit in the lower class ranks, and Geoff Allendorf had nothing but praise for the four year old gelding.

“This little horse collects a cheque every time he goes to the races.”

“In his last eight starts he has only been out of the top three spot once.”

“He has the best speed out of the gates of any horse in the stable, and that allowed Andrew (Calder) to put him into a great spot. It was a perfect ride.”

King Creole an eight year old son of Elvstroem (Aus) completed Allendorf’s afternoon on Saturday with a brilliant last to first win in the 40 to 70 rated event over 1800 metres.

Ridden again by Andrew Calder, King Creole was back at the tail throughout and defied the days on speed bais on the rain affected ground, to power home through the middle of the field to snatch a last stride win from the erratic Wonder Holy (Ryan Curatolo), with River Treasure (Ruan Maia) a half length away third.

“That’s made it a great day.” Allendorf said.

“He only got there because Andrew rode him so well.”

“He really is a genuine 2000 metre horse but we don’t have any races that distance now.”

“He’s eight years old and he gets so far back in his races and then he needs luck in the run home.”

King Creole has been a great money spinner for his connections having won 10 races and placed 11 times in his 61 starts. The gelding has collected $3 million HKD in prize money to date.
