Racing Review
Four Timer For Maia
2018-05-14 by Harry Troy

Macau’s leading jockey Brazilian Ruan Maia dominated Sunday’s Annual Charity Raceday with a sparkling four timer to give him an unassailable lead in the Jockey’s Premiership with only 16 race days left for the season.

Maia after Sunday sits on 45 winners, 19 ahead of four times Champion Luis Corrales who is on 26, with last year’s Champion rider Peter Ho in third spot on 25.

Maia was in superb form the whole day and kicked off his winning spree with Silent Height in race one the ICBC Charity Trophy over 1050 metres.

Prepared by Stephen Chow, Silent Height after racing on the lead powered away over the concluding stages to win by three lengths from Military Star (Luis Corrales) with, Tyson (Peter Ho) in third.

Silent Height a son of the Group 1 winner Redwood (GB) was having only his third race start and his run time of 1.02 compared very favorably with the higher grade races later in the afternoon.

Macau’s Iron horse Gauteng made it win number 18 in Macau when he finished much too strongly for Fortune Smiles to win the Star River – Windsor Arch Charity Trophy over 1510 metres, to give Maia a quick race to race double.

Gauteng is a rising 12 year old but still racing with the zest of a much younger horse, and with his 18 race wins and 42 placings from his 187 race starts in the enclave, has returned his owner Mr. Chan Ming Wing over $4.8 million HKD in prize money.

Trainer K H Leong has done a fine job with the son of More Than Ready (USA) who was formerly raced in Australia by the Darley Group where he won a maiden at Morninton when trained by Lee Freedman in 2009.

Ruan Maia was in full swing by the third of the day the Macau Racehorse Owners Association Charity Trophy over 1510 metres, and gave a fine front running display on the Danny Wong trained Best Of Luck to set a new track record of 1.32.3 for the distance.

Best Of Luck just keep giving in the run to the line to beat the even money favorite Obrigado Mais (Wayne Smith), with Benevolent Friend (Eric Cheung) in third.

New Zealand import Bobo So Good gave Maia his four timer for the afternoon when he showed plenty of fight to down The Pirate King (Luis Corrales), in the Honorary Racing Stewards Caring Cup over 1050 metres.

Bobo So Good was having only his third race start in Macau after arriving with a solid record of a win and two placings in New Zealand. Racing there also as Bobo So Good the son of Zoffany (Ire) bolted away with a maiden on a heavy track at Te Awamutu when prepared by Carl Henderson.

Only a head margin in the last of the day the Honorary Racing Stewards Cup over 1350 metres prevented Maia from racking up five winner’s on the afternoon. Maia was caught in the last stride by Golden Wealth (Fausto Henrique), with Cheerful Fish (Roger Yu) a neck off in third.

It was an amazing win by Golden Wealth who came from the tail of the field and literally sprouted wings in one the most dazzling finishing bursts seen in a long time to snatch victory in the last stride.

Beautiful Spring made amends for his luckless defeat two weeks prior with a big win under Oscar Chavez to win the Honorary Racing Stewards Philanthropy Cup over 1050 metres.

In a run on April 28 that was nothing short of astonishing, Beautiful Spring was completely taken out of the race won by Turquoise Cry, after an incident at the first turn saw him forced almost to the outside rail losing a conservative 10 lengths. Given time to balance up again by Chavez, the four year old produced a courageous effort to storm home for third only beaten two and a half lengths.

The win by Beautiful Spring gave K H Leong a winning double for the afternoon.
