Bow Noculars Dazzles In Sprint Trophy
2018-05-21 by Harry Troy

Bow Noculars made light of his wide barrier and the rise in class to lower the colors of Macau’s best sprinters with a brilliant win Saturday’s Group 3 Macau Sprint Trophy over 1200 metres.

With regular jockey Peter Ho in the saddle, Bow Noculars showed dazzling speed from gate 12 to easily cross the field and sit outside the leader Invincible. Once in the straight Ho cut loose on the five year and pinched a nice break inside one hundred and fifty to hold off the flying late challenge of Felizmaster (Wayne Smith), with Wonder Mossman (Charlie Chan) running on for third.

The cleverly named son of Red Arrow (Aus) from the Danehill mare Wide Vision, has been a model of consistency right from day one in Macau and has continued to lift the bar this season, rising from the Class 3 ranks to pick up his first Group victory on Saturday.

Bow Noculars only raced twice in Australia for a second and a third at Morphettville before being exported to Macau. Arriving in the enclave on a rating of 61 the gelding is now on 94 points following Saturday’s victory. His record now reads three wins and eight placed efforts from 15 starts and well over $1 million HKD in prize money.

For Peter Ho it was his fourth win in the time honored sprint which was first run in 1997. Ho first won the race on the champion sprinter Warcat in 2006, than followed wins on Luck San 2014 and Lucky and Wealthy 2015.

For trainer Rambo Tse it was his first win in the race as a trainer, however as a jockey he guided Lucky Charlie a rank outsider to an upset win in the event back in 2004.

Tony Fung took training honors for the afternoon in what was the second day of the MJC’s annual Charity raceday.

Fung saddled up Lucky Today in the Meng Mun Group Charity Trophy over 1800 metres with the $3.4 favorite duly landing the prize off a nice ride by Ruan Maia.

Lucky Today after enjoying the run of the race just off the leaders held on too well for the fast finishing Vancouver Jaguar (Luis Corrales), with River God Choi (Oscar Chavez) in third.

The very speedy Chapman Way literally ran his rivals off their legs in the L’Arc Charity Trophy over 1200 metres to give Fung his double for the afternoon.

Ridden by stable apprentice Kevin Leung, Chapman Way burst out of the gates to clear his opponents and lead easily. The three year went further ahead on straightening and although shortening stride near the line still had a length to spare over the stablemate To’s Family (Luis Corrales), with unlucky race favorite Luen On Dance Kid (Peter Ho) who was badly inconvenienced at the start, running home well for third

After Saturday Fung now shares top spot with Danny Wong in the trainer’s standings with only 15 race days to go in what is shaping up to be an intriguing battle for Premiership honors.

Fung has done a remarkable job considering he has a much a much smaller team then Danny Wong with just 18 horses in his stable, as opposed to Danny Wong’s 32.

The stats from the two trainers show Wong with 246 runners so far this season as opposed to Fung’s 169. Fung heads the strike rate with a 15% win rate and a 36% place rate against Wong’s 10% win strike and a 30% place rate.
