Barros On The Ball
2020-03-02 by Harry Troy

A winning treble on Saturdays all weather program has lifted Brazilian rider Dayversom Barros into equal third place in the Jockeys’ Premiership, taking him to within seven winners of championship leader Roger Yu.

Barros was in sparkling form and opened his account with a easy win on the Alan Tam trained Delighted Solution in the first of the day the Class 5 & 6 over 1510 metres.

In a great training effort by Alan Tam Delighted Solution was first up since July of last year and went into Saturday’s race 67 pounds up on his previous racing weight; however the son of Sebring (Aus) after travelling well early took up the running from the six hundred and gave nothing else a chance.

Next for Barros came Vescer from the Tony Fung yard in the Class 2 & 3 over 1050 metres who overcame a wide run to score a two lengths win over Thehorseiswithme (Roger Yu), with James Street (Stephane Ladjadj) in third.

Barros capped off his day with a victory on the Sio Cheong prepared Tuhao Choice in taking out the last of the day the Class 4 over 1350 metres.

New Zealand bred Tuhao Choice is a promising type by Jakkalberry (Ire) who has now won two races and placed three times from only six starts in Macau.

Prior to being exported to the enclave the gelding had trailed nicely in winning at at Avondale over 800 metres when prepared by Richard Collett.

Barros now sits on 16 winners in the rider’s standings for the season and equal third spot with Fausto Henrique and Oscar Chavez. With dual Macau Champion Ruan Maia now successfully plying his trade in Singapore, and Oscar Chavez relinquishing his license for personal reasons, the Jockeys Premiership is shaping to be a wide open event this season.

Roger Yu leads on 23 after a flying start to the season but should expect a strong challenge from former four times Champion Luis Corrales who is currently second on 18 victories. Fausto Henrique is another prime contender along with Frenchman J B Hamel who booted home a four timer last weekend.

Luis Corrales was another rider on the money Saturday and landed a double for the afternoon with wins on Modena Best and Mujaan.

Modena Best overcame an average getaway and a wide run to just keep rolling on to what ended up an easy victory in the Class 3 & 4 over 1510 metres.

A five year old Australian import Modena Best formerly raced there as Underground and won three races from 18 starts when rained by Brad Widdup. The son of Medaglia D’Oro (USA) won from 1900 to 2400 metres at tracks like Canberra (Acton track), and Mudgee and Kembla on the turf.

The win by Modena Best gave first season trainer Wayne Smith his fourth winner from 45 runners with six other placed efforts.

Luis Corrales then produced a fine ride to land the Tony Fung trained Mujaan home in the Class 2 over 1350 metres to give both trainer and jockey their double for the afternoon.

Mujaan enjoyed a lovely run in transit before gaining an opening on the inside at the top of the straight to clear out and have enough in hand to hold off the fast finishing Unforgettable (Shogo Nakano), with Captain Fabulous (Roger Yu) in third.

Best performance of the day was undoubtedly Alan Tam’s Electroplate Alloy in the Class 2 & 3 over 1050 metres who made light of interference at the two hundred metre point to win handsomely.

Ridden by Roger Yu, Electroplate Alloy was outsped early in a race run at hot speed; under pressure and spotting them five lengths at the top of the straight the son of Golden Archer (Aus) was just starting to hit his stride when Beautiful Eighteen shifted abruptly into his path resulting in Yu having to swerve sharply to avoid him. Electroplate Alloy regained his stride in an instant and unleashed a powerful finishing burst over the last one hundred to end up winning by a length and a quarter on the line.

Electroplate Alloy is putting together a grand record in Macau with four wins and six placings from his 12 runs to date.

The win gave Alan Tam two victories for the afternoon.
