KENILWORTH RACECOURSE :TURF

As the oldest racecourse in the country, Kenilworth is steeped in tradition and history. With its enviable geographic location and beauty, it has long been a favourite racing venue among both South African and overseas visitors.

The course has three separate tracks. The undulating 1200m straight is acknowledged as being the most testing sprint track in the country. There are two round courses; the “old” track, measuring 2700m in circumference with 450m run-in, is used primarily for autumn and winter racing. The “new” track measuring 2800m around with 600m run-in. Draw generally of little significance, but wet going can impact on draw in races down the straight.

It also hosts the running of the Queen's Plate over 1600m which is the oldest feature race on the South African horse racing calendar. It was raced for the 149th time on Saturday, January 9, 2010.

Race Summary: (2)HEART OF A LEGEND, (3)SAVAGE GARDEN and (6)PATHTOFAME should all improve with racing. While they could have a say in the outcome, this won't take much winning. As such, any betting support for one of the newcomers must be respected. (8)TALITHA BOREALIS and (7)SALTIRE represent formidable jockey-trainer combinations, but the latter makes most appeal on pedigree.

Race Summary: As was the case in the opener, there's little form to go by in Leg 1 of the Place Accumulator. Regally bred newcomer (6)SARK is likely to attract plenty of attention and need not be special to win on debut. The same, however, could be said of fellow first-timers (5)NOVEMBER STORM and (9)SILENT CHOICE. Watch the betting. Those with experience need to improve, though have scope to do so.

Race Summary: (2)HOTEL CIPRIANI, (3)WHAT A WINNER and (4)HE'S PRICELESS all have scope for improvement and could feature in the outcome if building on their best course-and-distance efforts. (1)DAYONAUT, however, has the best form of the raced runners and makes most appeal. Watch the betting on the newcomers, particularly R500kpurchase (8)DANCE A JIG.

Race Summary: Good maiden race. (11)PHOTOCOPY has shown enough in 2 sprints to suggest that he could land this prize, with the step up in trip likely to bring about any amount of improvement. (5)SPECTRA FORCE, (4)RISKY RAMBO and (1)SHADOW WARRIOR all have solid form behind useful sorts in recent starts, so should be competitive. Both (8)GREENSTREETTRACTOR and (10)JAILHOUSE ROCK could improve to feature.

Race Summary: Several with chances, though 3yo's (4)UNDERCOVER AGENT and (2)HEMMINGWAY appear particularly well placed on handicap debut. Both must shoulder big weights but are probably better than rated and may have bigger targets later in the season. (1)GADGET MAN and (3)TRIPPLE EXPLOSION are drawn wide but have shown enough to be competitive. (5)WESTERN STORM, (7)KING OF ACES and (9)STORM FRONT could earn.

Race Summary: Smashing contest. (1)KAMPALA CAMPARI made no impression in a Highveld Gr 1 last time. He has since been rested and gelded so should have more to offer - monitor his progress. Unbeaten (2)TAP O' NOTH, winner of a Listed race as a 2yo,and promising (4)COT CAMPBELL have plenty to do on these terms but both 3yo's are probably better than rated. Best-weighted (3)OUR MATE ART sets the standard.

Race Summary: Tricky! (2)GOODTIME GAL, (3)WHOSE THAT GIRL and (5)SEATTLE GOLD are well treated by the conditions but would prefer racing over further to be seen at their best. (1)CAPTAIN'S FLAME is also well in here and probably best of the quartet over this trip. (4)ANNELINE and (6)RED LIGHT GIRL are distance suited, though a chance is taken on the latter who could prove better than rated if fit from a break.
