KENILWORTH RACECOURSE :TURF

As the oldest racecourse in the country, Kenilworth is steeped in tradition and history. With its enviable geographic location and beauty, it has long been a favourite racing venue among both South African and overseas visitors.

The course has three separate tracks. The undulating 1200m straight is acknowledged as being the most testing sprint track in the country. There are two round courses; the “old” track, measuring 2700m in circumference with 450m run-in, is used primarily for autumn and winter racing. The “new” track measuring 2800m around with 600m run-in. Draw generally of little significance, but wet going can impact on draw in races down the straight.

It also hosts the running of the Queen's Plate over 1600m which is the oldest feature race on the South African horse racing calendar. It was raced for the 149th time on Saturday, January 9, 2010.

(7)LOVE OF INDIA can surprise if back to best. Quite a few have only had one or two starts and can improve.

Race Summary: (1)DYNASTY'S BLOSSOM just needed last after seven months off, and suspect will take all the beating. (10)PEARL JAM ran on well over shorter on debut, and could pose the main danger. (2)FIRST SWALLOW is reliable, and will be involved. (4)SILVER STREAMER and (5)IMPERIAL CHESTNUT can fill a minor place.

Race Summary: (3)STREETFIGHTING MAN ran on well when trying this trip, and has scope. (1)PHOTOCOPY and (2)SALTORO RIDGE are both hard knocking maidens and will give cheek. Well bred (11)BRANDENBURG made a reasonable debut and will improve. (4)PEG OF ZEUS can surprise at best.

Race Summary: (3)BLOW IN THE BOX has had two good runs since gelding, and should now be cherry ripe. Combined with (1)ROMMEL and (7)MAX POWER, that gives Joey Ramsden a strong hand. (5)DANGER ROCK will appreciate the extra and can surprise. (6)MTOROSHANGA almost pulled off an upset last time, and will go close if repeating.
