KENILWORTH RACECOURSE :TURF

As the oldest racecourse in the country, Kenilworth is steeped in tradition and history. With its enviable geographic location and beauty, it has long been a favourite racing venue among both South African and overseas visitors.

The course has three separate tracks. The undulating 1200m straight is acknowledged as being the most testing sprint track in the country. There are two round courses; the “old” track, measuring 2700m in circumference with 450m run-in, is used primarily for autumn and winter racing. The “new” track measuring 2800m around with 600m run-in. Draw generally of little significance, but wet going can impact on draw in races down the straight.

It also hosts the running of the Queen's Plate over 1600m which is the oldest feature race on the South African horse racing calendar. It was raced for the 149th time on Saturday, January 9, 2010.

Race Summary: (5)PATA PATA makes most appeal on form. He has enough speed and ability and pace to show these rivals a clean pair of heels. Little separates (1)QUARLLO and (2)ARABIAN SONG on a recent meeting - both have earning potential. The latter has more scope but an earlier engagement too, so his participation must be must monitored. Watch the newcomers, especially (6)TROOP THE COLOUR.

Race Summary: This formline could be worth following. (9)OMEGA FORCE made good improvement last time with the benefit of experience when finishing a long way clear of well-bred (10)PERFECTPROPORTIONS, (11)SAN ROCHELLE and (12)TWO COLOURS. That trio would have come on since and could get closer. (13)VASE made a good debut, despite drifting in the betting and should have more to offer. Watch newcomer (14)VICE VERSA!

Race Summary: Good race. (5)DOYLES ran with promise when backed on debut. He is bred to enjoy the extra and should improve with experience. (7)JAILHOUSE ROCK may have finished closer last time and would have come on since, so warrants respect. (11)WHAT A JOKER and (1)PROUD DYNASTY could feature with further progress but well-bred newcomers (6)EARL OF WARWICK and (8)PARADE OF NATIONS could pose a bigger threat.

Race Summary: (11)SOMMERSONNE and (12)TRAVEL IN STYLE improved in their second outings with the benefit of experience, and can contest the outcome with further progress expected. Both (2)SYMPHONY and (3)SNOW CRYSTAL finished close-up in their respective last starts and can make their presence felt if building on those efforts. (4)PUMPKIN QUEEN, (7)BLUE RHONE SKY and newcomer (8)FIRST IN MAY have earning potential.

Race Summary: Wide open. (10)HEREFORD could struggle to confirm superiority over (5)WESTERN STORM, (4)CARDINAL CALL and (3)FIRE WALKER having sprung a to beat those rivals recently. (2)VICTORIOUS CAPTAIN ran well on handicap debut in a similar race over further. He is best over this trip and should be competitive. (7)WHAT A WINNER franked the form of debut winner (6)READY STEADY GO, so the latter is given the nod

Race Summary: Intriguing contest. (2)GOODTIME GAL was rewarded for her consistency with a Grade 3 prize last time but (4)GIMME SIX can reverse that form on these terms and with that run under her belt. On that form, (8)WHOSE THAT GIRL could also make her presence felt. Reliable (1)SILVAN STAR has scope and runs well fresh. Well-weighted (10)SAFE HARBOUR needed her last run and is capable. All eyes on this!
