Inquiry of PLIKFIRE
2024-03-21 18:30
Today (21-03-2024) the Stewards resumed the enquiry into the performance of PLIKFIRE in the Hartlepool Rating 45-25 1050m on Sunday 17th March 2024. Further evidence was taken from Trainer C F Chan and jockey K H Yu.

Trainer Mr Chan stated he instructed jockey Yu to jump well, give the gelding a few digs to be forward but do not fight for the lead as there would be a fast pace. When questioned regarding jockey Yu ride Mr Chan stated he was not to upset and felt the gelding would be better suited over 1200m on turf.

Jockey Yu confirmed the instructions. When asked why he let PLIKFIRE drop out to last and did not obtain a midfield position but let CAPTAIN CIRCUIT pass him near the 800m Yu said his horse jumped well and he commenced to ride his horse along in an attempt to obtain a forward position, however; he noticed horses on his outside were coming across at pace. He pointed out his horse lack the necessary pace to pursue a forward position and his mount also resented the kick back resulting in his dropping further back than anticipated despite his effort in maintaining his position in midfield.

To a question as he knew the horse having ridden it eight times previously and been on pace each time why he elected to drop out to last then give PLIKFIRE, the favourite, an impossible task by being 11 lengths off the leader at the 400m?

Rider stated that PLIKFIRE was having his 1st start over 1050M and in his opinion the trip was too short for him, and despite his effort his horse was beaten for pace and got further back than usual. He also pointed out that his horse resented the kick back generated by horses who came across from his outside, because of that his mount was reluctant to stride out. Hence, he ended up in a rearward position after the 700M.

Yu was asked to explain his feeble effort at riding his mount out in the straight? Jockey Yu said in the straight he rode his mount out but only kept on one pace even after the use his whip on the horse. He felt the horse was reluctant to stride out since the early stages and didn’t respond to his riding in the straight, so over the final 100M he stood up on his horse.

Mr Chan, who has started PLIKFIRE for 13 of its 28 runs where it has won from 1200m on turf and 3 times on sand from 1350 to 1600m, when asked why he entered the gelding in a 1050m race for the first time in its career especially when there was a more suitable race over 1350m of the same class on the program offered as an explanation.

Trainer C F Chan said prior to entering PLIKFIRE to the race, he discussed the matter with the owner and they decided to enter him into the 1050M race rather than the 1350M race. Trainer and owner agreed that the horse is tiring after a long campaign and is also feeling the wear and tear; therefore they felt the horse might benefit from the drop in distance.

The enquiry was adjourned to another date.
