Race Report

RACE-5 THE SUNDERLAND RATING 30-0 (CLASS 6) 1350 METRES (18)

2 Cheerful Companion (L Corrales) - Shortly after the start was severely checked by 7 Gold On and lost considerable ground .
4 Rosary Diamond (H Lam) - Shortly after the start was taken out slightly by 6 Chapman Bunbun.
6 Chapman Bunbun (Y M Choi) - Jumped awkwardly outwards resulting in 4 Rosary Diamond being taken slightly wider on the track. Jockey Y M Choi was warned to make a greater effort to straighten his mounts in similar circumstances.
7 Gold On (W L Ho) - Shortly after the start shifted in when not clear of 2 Cheerful Companion which was severely checked.

RACING INCIDENT & INQUIRY:
The Stewards considered an objection lodged by the connections of 2 Cheerful Companion (3rd place getter), Jockey L Corrales and Trainer M C Tam against 7 Gold On ridden by Jockey W L Ho being declared the winner for alleging interference shortly after the start. Evidence was taken from both Jockeys W L Ho and L Corrales and the official patrol films were reviewed. It was established that shortly after the start that 7 Gold On shifted in when insufficiently clear of 2 Cheerful Companion which had to be severely checked and lost considerable ground. After considering all the evidence, the Stewards were of the opinion that the material effect of the interference was greater than the beaten margin and as such upheld the objection and amended the Judge’s placings to read as follows:

1st No. 4 Rosary Diamond (H Lam)
2nd No. 2 Cheerful Companion (L Corrales)
3rd No. 7 Gold On (W L Ho)

At a subsequent inquiry, Jockey W L Ho the rider of 7 Gold On was found guilty to a charge of careless riding under MJC Rule 132 (i) in that shortly after the start he permitted his mount to shift in when in sufficiently clear resulting in 2 Cheerful Companion (L Corrales) having to be severely checked and in doing so lost considerable ground. Jockey W L Ho’s licence to ride in races was suspended for a period of 1 racemeeting to cover the meeting of Saturday 21st October 2017 and he was issued a fine of HKD14,000. He was advised of his Right of Appeal. In arriving at the penalty, the Stewards took into account Jockey W L Ho’s record and his not guilty plea and the mitigating circumstances.
