Race Report

RACE-2 THE NAPLES (DIV 2) RATING 70-50 (CLASS 2&3) 1200 METRES (284)

2 Felizmaster (O Chavez) -Was marginally slow to begin.
4 Grexit (W L Ho) -Bumped by 11 Rivalry on jumping away. Near the 600 metres was checked when awkwardly placed between 11 Rivalry and 9 Tremendous Wins which was hanging out despite the efforts of its rider. After considering all of the circumstances and in particular the racing manners of 9 Tremendous Wins at the point of the race, the Stewards took no further action. A post race veterinary examination failed to reveal any significant abnormality.
6 Fortune Fast (K Leung) -Raced fiercely in the middle stages. A post race veterinary examination failed to reveal any significant abnormality.
8 Pearl Lucky (S Ladjadj) -Raced wide without cover until leaving 700 metres.
9 Tremendous Wins (J B Hamel) - Leaving the 800 metres commenced to hang out and continued to do so for the remainder of the race proving difficult for its rider to control. Trainer Y C Fung was informed that a warning had been placed on 9 Tremendous Wins for its racing manners.
11 Rivalry (S Nakano) -On jumping away bumped 4 Grexit. Raced wide without cover throughout.

RACING INCIDENT & INQUIRY:
The Stewards opened an inquiry into the ride by Jockey V Tolentino the rider of 10 Northern Legend from the 500 metres to the 150 metres. Jockey V Tolentino stated that he was instructed from the wide draw to try and get a good position, however, if he was to be caught wide to come back and obtain a position on the running rail and to ride for luck. He further stated that shortly after the start he was of the opinion that the best option was to come back and obtain a position on the rail which he was able to do and the gelding travelled comfortably. He added he maintained the position on the rail at the tail of the field and had envisaged staying on the rail, however near the 400 metres, 3 Galaxy Giant (T Appie) which was racing in front of him was shifting ground and as his mount was traveling strongly he elected to shift out around that gelding’s heels to establish clear running. He added that on entering the home straight he elected to shift back in across the heels of 3 Galaxy Giant to comply with his riding instructions and was then able to place 10 Northern Legend under pressure hands and heels until leaving the 200 metres where he used the whip and 10 Northern Legend ran on to finish the race off satisfactorily. Trainer J Lau confirmed the instructions and stated that from the wide draw, he wanted Jockey V Tolentino to obtain a position on the running rail and to ride for luck. He further stated to the Stewards that after viewing the Stewards patrol film, he was of the opinion that Jockey V Tolentino may have tried too hard to comply with his instructions. After considering all of the evidence and circumstances, the Stewards were of the opinion that Jockey V Tolentino had erred in that after improving to the outside of 3 Galaxy Giant rounding turn, he should have continued to improve wider on the track which would have afforded 10 Northern Legend a clear and uninterrupted run to the finish. He was issued with a severe reprimand for his lack of initiative and was further advised that should be continue to ride in such a manner, more severe action may be taken in future. In arriving at this decision, the Stewards took into account Jockey V Tolentino’s relative inexperience in riding in Macau and his desire to comply with his trainer’s instructions.
