Hong Kong born Eric Cheung Chi Lap was originally a trainee Apprentice with the Hong Kong Jockey Club’s Apprentice School, joining at the age of 15 years old.
After completing his training there was no available apprenticeshipin Hong Kong, and at the age of 18 years he commenced work as a riding boy with the HKJC. In 2015 he went to Australia in the hopes of gaining an apprenticeship, and after some time was attached to the Gordon Yorke stable at Gosford.
Cheung rode a winner at his very first race ride on Radiologist at Coffs Harbour in 2016. Eric rode 17 winners from just over 100 race rides in Australia, before visa problems forced his return to Hong Kong.
Joining the Macau Jockey Club as an apprentice in January 2018, Cheung also won on his first ride in the enclave on My Fortune Star onMarch 10, 2018 for his new Master Stanley Chin.
The twice leading apprentice was granted a senior riders license for the 2020/2021 season, and is currently in second place in the Jockeys Premiership on as at 25/05/21.
His total career wins number 104 as at 25/5/21.
