Race Report

RACE-1 THE HARTLEPOOL RATING 35-0 (CLASS 5&6) 1350 METRES (78)

2 Not A Single Help (D Barros) -Near the 150 metres was brushed by 7 Lucky Hugo which shifted in. A short distance later then shifted out slightly and brushed 7 Lucky Hugo. Leaving the 75 metres was steadied when hampered by 7 Lucky Hugo which shifted in whilst being ridden along resulting in both 2 Not A Single Help and Jockey D Barros becoming unbalanced. A post race veterinary examination revealed that the gelding was lame in the left foreleg. Trainer S H Cheong was informed that 2 Not A Single Help will not be permitted to race for 11 days and until such time that a veterinary clearance is produced.
3 Fortune Lady (M Tanaka) -Brushed with 4 Golden Bullseye on jumping away. Near the 1250 metres had its hindquarters bumped by 4 Golden Bullseye which when racing greenly shifted in and away from 2 Not A Single Help. Near the 500 metres momentarily raced in restricted room between 5 Darling Ten and 4 Golden Bullseye which shifted out around the heels of 1 Master Of Mars to improve. A post race veterinary examination failed to reveal any significant abnormality.
4 Golden Bullseye (S Ladjadj) -Brushed with 3 Fortune Lady on jumping away. Near the 1250 metres when racing greenly, shifted in and away from 2 Not A Single Help and bumped the hindquarters of 3 Fortune Lady.
5 Darling Ten (F Henrique) -Was tightened for room on jumping away between 6 Sheng Li Star and 7 Lucky Hugo, both of which shifted ground. Near the 1100 metres had to be steadied when awkwardly placed on the heels of 6 Sheng Li Star which shifted out slightly when laying out.
6 Sheng Li Star (C L Cheung) -Knuckled on jumping away. Leaving the 300 metres was inclined to shift in under pressure. Leaving the 200 metres was disappointed for run between 2 Not A Single Help and 7 Lucky Hugo and was obliged to shifted out around the heels of 7 Lucky Hugo to obtain clear running.
7 Lucky Hugo (J B Hamel) -Near the 150 metres shifted in and brushed 2 Not A Single Help and a short distance later was brushed by 2 Not A Single Help which shifted out slightly. Leaving the 75 metres shifted in and hampered 2 Not A Single Help.

RACING INCIDENT & INQUIRY:
Following the running of the race the “Enquiry” sign was semaphored and the Stewards considered an objection lodged by Jockey D Barros the rider of 2 Not A Single Help (2nd placed getter) against 7 Lucky Hugo (J B Hamel) being declared the winner for alleging interference in the home straight. Evidence was taken from Jockey D Barros and Mr. S H Cheong the trainer of 2 Not A Single Help and Jockey J B Hamel and Mr. M C Tam the trainer of 7 Lucky Hugo. It was established that near the 150 metres 2 Not A Single Help was brushed by 7 Lucky Hugo which shifted in. A short distance later 2 Not A Single Help shifted out slightly and brushed 7 Lucky Hugo. It was then established that leaving the 75 metres 2 Not A Single Help had to be steadied when hampered by 7 Lucky Hugo which shifted in resulting in both 2 Not A Single and Jockey D Barros becoming unbalanced. After considering all of the circumstances and taking into consideration the beaten margin of 1 length between both runners and the way both horses had finished the race off, the Stewards could not be satisfied that had the interference not occurred 2 Not A Single Help would have beaten 7 Lucky Hugo and therefore dismissed the objection and declared correct weight on the Judge’s placing.

At a subsequent inquiry, Jockey J B Hamel the rider of 7 Lucky Hugo pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under MJC Rule 132 (i) in that leaving the 75 metres whilst riding his mount along he permitted 7 Lucky Hugo to shift in hampering 2 Not A Single Help which had to be steadied resulting in both 2 Not A Single Help and Jockey D Barros becoming unbalanced. Jockey J B Hamel’s license to ride in races was suspended for one racemeeting, covering the meeting of Saturday, 9 January 2021. In arriving at penalty, the Stewards took into account Jockey J B Hamel’s guilty plea, his disciplinary record and the degree of interference. He was advised of his Right of Appeal.
