Race Report

RACE-3 THE HAWKES BAY RATING 70-50 (CLASS 2&3) 1500 METRES (190)

1 Hostwin Saturn (W H Lao) - Was slightly slow to begin. Raced wide without cover.
3 Owner Alliance (C L Cheung) - Approaching the 200 metres was taken wider by 7 Breezy Artax which shifted out under pressure. Apprentice X C Liang was spoken to advisedly. Shortly after that, dipped. Rider explained when questioned that he was instructed to attempt to lead today, however his mount did not have sufficient speed to cross the runners to his inside in the early stages, and he made the decision to settle behind the leaders. He added that in the back straight when the pace slackened, 7 Breezy Artax improved around him quickly which prevented him from shifting to the outside of 6 Association Eight and improving. He said he placed his mount under pressure at the 800 metres however it was one paced and did not respond as he had expected. A post race veterinary examination failed to reveal any significant abnormality.
5 Yuanno (M Tanaka) - Raced keenly in the back straight. Rider M Tanaka explained when questioned that he had been instructed to settle in a forward position. He said after entering the back straight, he was at the girth of 8 Snow Storm however 7 Breezy Artax then improved to his outside and he elected to come back behind 8 Snow Storm as he was of the opinion that 7 Breezy Artax may have settled to his outside and cause his horse to over race, and also that 8 Snow Storm picked up the speed at that point. He added that his mount was one paced when placed under pressure.
7 Breezy Artax (Apprentice X C Liang) - Was marginally slow to begin. Raced three wide without cover.
8 Snow Storm (C Perkins) - When questioned regarding the improved performance of 8 Snow Storm, Trainer J Lau stated that the gelding had some excuses at its most recent start and appreciated the tempo of today’s race.

RACING INCIDENT & INQUIRY:
Rounding the turn near 1200 metres, 2 Luen On Poseidon had to be restrained when momentarily tightened by 3 Owner Alliance which rolled in momentarily when being eased from the heels of 6 Association Eight which was being eased off the heels of 5 Yuanno when the pace steadied. As Stewards believed that there were contributing factors to the incident, no action was taken.
