Race Report

RACE-4 THE MATAMATA RATING 60-40 (CLASS 3&4) 1050 METRES (40)

1 Hanigan (R Stewart) –Knuckled on jumping away and was then tightened for room between 6 Voguish and 7 Cheerful Fish which shifted out. Approaching the winning post had to change course to the inside of 10 Happy Orchard which shifted out slightly under pressure and had to be steadied. Disappointing. Rider reported that his mount resented the kick back and on returning he had informed the connections that in his opinion, the gelding may be better suited racing on the turf track. A post race veterinary examination ordered by the Stewards failed to reveal any significant abnormality.
3 Bowl Lucky (K W Leong) –The Stewards questioned Jockey K W Leong regarding his riding rounding the home turn. He explained that his mount was unbalanced and felt like it was hanging out and for this reason he was trying to keep his mount balanced and on the bit. He added that on straightening when he did place his mount under pressure, it failed to respond as anticipated. The Stewards notified Jockey Leong that although his mount may have been somewhat unbalanced he must ride all his mounts in a manner that leaves no room for queries.
6 Voguish (L Salles) –Tightened for room at the start between 10 Happy Orchard and 1 Hanigan which shifted out.
7 Cheerful Fish (C F Wong) –Rider reported that tonight’s pace was too fast and that his mount commenced to weaken from the 200 metre mark. A post race veterinary examination ordered by the Stewards failed to reveal any significant abnormality.
9 Only Pearl (W H Lao) –Dwelt when the gates were released and lost ground (2L).
10 Happy Orchard (Apprentice K Y Wong) –Raced four wide without cover. Rider K Y Wong was severely reprimanded for dropping his whip near the 100 metres. On arriving at this decision, the Stewards took into account that this was his first offence under this rule.
12 River Colour (J Cordero) –Was marginally slow to begin and then taken out by 6 Voguish which was in turn taken out by 1 Hanigan which shifted out and away from 7 Cheerful Fish.
