Race Report

RACE-3 THE REEFTON RATING 60-30 (CLASS 3&4) 1800 METRES (27)

1 So Happy (W Smith) –Rider reported that his mount was inclined to race keenly in the early and middle stages when 3 River Control which was over racing, raced close to his outside. He added his mount quickened from the 600 metres however was one paced in the straight. A post race veterinary examination failed to reveal any significant abnormality.
2 Total Management (C Perkins) – Approaching the 1700 metres was momentarily steadied when awkwardly placed close to the heels of 1 So Happy. As a result 6 Turquoise Heart which was following had to be steadied in consequence. Was held up and unable to improve from the 400 metres until 200 metres.
3 River Control (K W Leong) –Over raced in the early and middle stages. Near the 50 metres was steadied when awkwardly placed on the heels of 1 So Happy which shifted out slightly.
4 Truely Love (Y M Choi) –Jumped awkwardly. Raced wide rounding the home turn.
6 Turquoise Heart (L Salles) –Jumped awkwardly. Steadied near the 1700 metres when awkwardly placed close to the heels of 2 Total Management.
9 Fortune Smiles (K K Lai) –Raced three wide without cover from the 1300 metres. The Stewards questioned Jockey K K Lai in regards to the tactics adopted on the gelding in particular the reasons for leaving a position with cover behind 3 River Control leaving 1300 metres which resulted in 9 Fortune Smiles racing three wide without cover from that point onwards. Jockey K K Lai explained he was instructed to jump well, get to the fence and try lead if possible. He added after the start he rode his mount forward however racing around the first turn he was crossed by 3 River Control which placed him in the one out one back position. He further added 3 River Control then began to over race in front of him, so he elected to shift to a three wide position and improve in an attempt to obtain the lead and comply with his instructions. He explained that he was unable to obtain the lead due to 1 So Happy and 3 River Control maintaining their position to his inside and he was then forced to race three wide without cover for the remainder of the race. After considering all of the circumstances, the Stewards severely reprimand Jockey K K Lai for his lack of judgment in that when he was crossed by 3 River Control in the early stages, he should have attempted to restrain his mount and maintain a position with cover behind that gelding, which would have afforded him a more favorable position in the race. He was further advised of his obligations to ride all his mounts and in a manner that leaves no room for query and should he ride in such a manner again, further action maybe taken. A post race veterinary examination failed to reveal any significant abnormality.
