RACING INCIDENT & INQUIRY:
The Stewards opened an inquiry into the tactics adopted on 6 Desi Star (M Cangas), with particular concerns being the reason for the gelding racing four wide without cover throughout.
Jockey M Cangas explained that he was instructed to attempt to have the gelding just in behind the speed with cover. He added that after beginning well he rode forward in an attempt to comply with his instructions however due to his wide draw he was unable to obtain a position with cover due to runners improving to his inside. As a result of this, entering the back straight he was caught racing four wide without cover. When questioned as to why he did not improve his position racing down the back straight in an attempt to obtain a position closer to the running rail, Jockey M Cangas stated that near the 1200 metres he went to improve his position, however 8 Moon Walker which was to his inside had also improved with him which forced him to remain in a four wide position. He added he did not feel he was ever a chance to cross 8 Moon Walker down the back straight, so he elected to take hold of his mount and allow it to travel comfortably, albeit wide without cover. Trainer K M Chin confirmed the instructions and added that as 6 Desi Star was racing over 1500 metres for the first time he stressed to Jockey M Cangas to endeavor to take cover if possible so as to allow the gelding a chance to finish its race off. He further added that these instructions were consistent to those given at its previous starts. After considering all of the circumstances, the Stewards issued Jockey M Cangas a severe reprimand for his lack of judgment in that near the 1200 metres when caught in a four wide position he should have made a greater attempt to improve his position down the back straight in order to obtain a position closer to the running rail. He was further reminded of his obligations to ride all his mounts in such a manner as to leave no room for query.
